computer server racks?

2000-11-21 by perpetual@uswest.net

anybody, like myself, working in the computer industry must have
wondered at one time if those floor to ceiling server racks those
hoity-toity IS guys all have would be good for a modular. so...i was
wondering...anybody tried those? they're CHEAP, like $150 bucks.
that's about as much or less than one of those pop-up SKB briefcases,
and they're about 5 times the space.

hey larry H! what do you have your monstrosity of an MOTM in? i
know your's is somewhat of a towering inferno...

$150?!? Where did you see that? Some of the racks I've seen have been a
couple of grand! Of course, those are full enclosure types, several feet
deep, with swinging glass doors and everything...

If they're that cheap and still good, I could use one to grow into...

i use them at work. they are cheap and very sturdy. if you are really
interested, you could probably order them through compUSA. they won't stock
them, but they can order them. you might have to ask several different
employees until you get one that knows what you are talking about.

i don't know where you're at, but here on the west coast, we have
these magical wonderlands called Fry's, whose wherehouses are big,
loss leaders are cheap, and sales staff are blissfully
unintelligent. but that's where i saw these things and the price tag
was juuuuust right. now mind you, that's just two long poles with a
bottom and a top, but mine's not no top secret lock-down type
patching....

Oh, I am aware of the wonders (and the wonder-brains) at Fry's. I live in
Berkeley. :)

I've seen the two-stick frames you're referring to, but I'd be concerned
with dust and whatnot on the PCBs. I'd like a back and sides. The back is
actually optional. Door not necessary. :) Still, that would be far
cheaper than getting a large "wood" Omnirack rack from Guitar Center...

I'm using the Omnirack Pro20 for my MOTM and I'm very pleased with the
quality. Having casters is nice. I bought some extra rails for the back
and mounted the 900 and an Expressionist on the back.

well, here's the kicker, right next to the rack itself, they have all
these "accessories" like a screw in shelf (i was thinking 606 myself
but...) you could always hang upside down over the modules for at
least some degree of dust protection. i can already hear the cash
register ringing like crazy, but i think all tolled, it probably
works out better in the end.

Ive always loved the old Moog lab looks, so these racks are my ticket!. I
have discussed this subject very much with Larry Hendry as well. The
enclosed ones like Larrys are a bit more Like $300+, the open face ones are
about $120-150. I have 3 of the open face here. One for Midi
modules/computer monitor, one for audio (2 yamaha o1v mixers racked-effects,
patch bays, etc.), and one for modular gear now. The opens are Ok... but I
think for the MOTM you should have a enclosed cabinent to keep the dust,
etc. out. Also, with the open racks there are noticeable gaps on the left
and right ends of the rack where the rails are. This may or may not be
different with an enclosed rack.
go here for info......

open racks: California Chassis or contact markertek, but expect to pay
more.

model #'s OR-77, 66 and 55 $122 for the 77's plus shipping

closed racks Like Larry uses: see the Allied catolgue
http://www.alliedelec.com/
The model number I have is RR-1369MG
I found them in the Allied catalog available in three sizes (heights).
All of them are the same 8" depth
RR-1367 = 61 1/4" rack space, 64 5/8" overall height $320.05 74
pounds ship
RR-1368 = 70" rack space, 73 3/8" overall height $340.50 77
"
RR-1367 = 77" rack space, 80 3/8" overall height $362.36 81
"\MG = Metallic gray (like mine)
BT = Black texture

RE: [motm] computer server racks?

2000-11-21 by Cary Roberts

First off, they're telco style racks, not server racks. Server
racks are typically four post and/or enclosed. A good enclosed
36" deep server rack runs about $1100. A cheap bolt together
telco style rack is about $100. Possibilities include:

Chatsworth - http://www.chatsworth.com/catalog/page15.asp
B-Line - http://www.bline.com/product/BLT98/SRR_1AL_Racks01.htm
Newton - http://www.newtoninst.com

The Chatsworth racks aren't near the quality of B-Line or Newton,
but they have 10/32 threaded rails and are more than sturdy enough
for lightweight MOTM use. B-Line and Newton make unequal flange
racks with deeper channels that would make for a nice MOTM rack,
but they are _HEAVY_. Try your local Graybar for availability.
