Moog/MOTM Cabinet

2000-10-22 by alt-mode

Well, Paul shipped me more modules and I didn't have a place to put them so I had to
finish off my Moog-style "upper" cabinet, even without the flat rails. I installed
the modules with temporary wood screws for now. It came out pretty nice, if I do
say so myself. It is 27U wide so it holds 13x2U modules plus one 1U module.

I uploaded some pictures of the cabinet at various stages of construction into the
MOTM files area on egroups.com: http://www.egroups.com/files/motm/MoogCab/
I sent the plans out as an attachement long ago. I'll try to dig up the file and
add it to the files area (its on another computer).

A few problems/lessons learned along the way:

- Watch out for wood warping. A friend built the cabinet out of black birch that he
had been drying for >2 years but it still warped a bit. It isn't bad but slightly
noticeable.

- The 3/8" bevel that I had for mounting the flat rails/modules wasn't really wide
enough. I had my woodworker friend add an additional strip of wood on the inside to
build up the lip for mounting the rail and modules.

- I used Minwax dark walnut stain and it was *really* dark. Again, it looks OK but
a lighter stain (such as regular walnut) would have been closer to the Moog walnut.
I lightend it a bit by rubbing the darkest spots with a rag soaked in paint thinner.

- I used some T-nuts for mounting the power distribution panels on spacers. This
could have been done just as easy with bolts from below with washers and nuts on
top. T-nuts didn't work with the power supply since there wasn't enough room to
insert the screws into the bottom plate of the power supply.

If you are interested in seeing a pic with the cabinet in the rest of the system,
send me a note.

Eric

Thanks for sharing Eric. It looks nice. Do you have a back planned for it?
If so, made of what? Will you have any ventilation around the PS if you
have a back?

Re: [motm] Moog/MOTM Cabinet

Thanks. No, I wasn't planning a back for the cabinet at the moment. Right now it
is sitting pretty close to a wall in the middle of a "stack" with no air vents
nearby so dust accumulation should be minimal. The depth of the box at about 10"
also provides a pretty good overhang over the modules.

If I do put a back on it, I will probably use some thin "Masonite" and put holes
around the PS. If the PS wasn't so close to the back, I would go even simpler and
tack some fabric, like chinz (sp) on the back. I had been planning to do that for a
20" deep rack that has held my modules for about 10 months now but I noticed that
there was almost no dust on the modules in that amount of time. If the modules had
been lower in the rack, perhaps that would have made a difference. I find that
horizontal surfaces and stuff near the floor gets dusty in my studio. The other
items stay fairly clean with little cleaning.

BTW, I forgot to thank you Larry, for providing the wire I used! It was great stuff
and very easy to work with for the PS distribution.

Thanks,
    Eric

Thanks for all the additional info. It certainly is a nice looking cabinet.
I love that look and am planning a very similar cabinet (but only 24 spaces
wide and 1/2 rack space taller for "Larry's magic bus" TM.

I think all my stuff came electrostatically charged from the manufacturer to
attract dust. :)

You're welcome. I found it to be great stuff and use it myself. I can get
several different types of the grey stuff. Mostly # 12, and # 14 with the
very thin and flexible insulation. I can also get some colored stuff (8
colors) which is about # 20 (maybe 18). I use the red, black, and white (I
wonder what for).

The good thing is it is all free. When we run cables at work, they leave
them long for termination. So, there are a lot of 6 to 10 foot scraps of
this stuff which are useless at work, but great for synth-diy projects. Any
one wanting some of it just ask. The bad part is, I just pick it up whan I
am on construction sites where wiring is being done. So, if you need it
"next week" I might not have exactly what you need on hand.

MOTM stuff for sale

2000-10-23 by sikorsky

hello chaps

i've just seen that VEMIA (here in the UK) has three MOTM 800s up for
auction, reserve is £160 for the lot

check out www.vemia.co.uk lot number 10201

just to let my stance be known - i'm selling a pile of stuff (crap, erm
sorry, quality outboard), so i might just pick these three up (poor lonely
kittens)
however, if anyone else on this list intends bidding for them, i'll probably
just stand back and leave you to it
(private replies only..?)
the auction closes on 15th November (which is incidentally also my
birthday...)

cheers

you don't mean that glazed floral fabric that characterises the late 19th
century, and brought back into fashion in the 1980s..?
(chintz)

noooo !!!!!

still i suppose it makes a change from fake fur or cabskin

hello all (again)

my cabinet is double module depth, with power supply at rear) - it must be
around 12" deep (including patent "Oakley Lip" to protect pots in case of
dire emergency in transit). i haven't had a problem with cabinet movement
even with a three row high system - i think the secret is weight, what with
10mm MDF on an aluminium frame, the bugger has too much inertia, also a good
sturdy set of rubber feet helps

oh yes, and if you put the VCOs at the bottom and EGs at the top it keeps
the centre of gravity down :-)

Wow, you learn something new every day! Thanks Dave, for the correction,
explanation, and offer.

BTW, I'm listening to Dweller At The Threshold "No Boundary Condition" right now.
It just arrived today. Very good stuff by Dave Fulton & friends! I'm anxious to
listen to more!

Wow! Thanks guys!

It seems like it was done years ago! (It was!) A bunch of DAT's and a
DR4d! I hope you will like the new one that now due to a "renewed"
focus on family it delayed by at least a few months!

BTW: Dave that web page was killer.

Thanks for the offer Dave. I am still planning the removable closed back
approach. However, I really do find everyone else's choices and designs
interesting. I like stealing.... errr, I mean borrowing other people's
ideas.
