Fw: live with motm

Fw: live with motm

2000-06-23 by Paul Wagorn (Worldbid)

hi all:

I'm going to be doing a live PA (even though i promised myself "never
again!") at
a bar this weekend & I've decided to bring along my motm system. I'm
playing
with some people that i've never played with before, so we're just going to
wing it
& jam it out.

Problem is, we got together last night to practice together once before we
play,
and though we sounded good, i had a horrible time with a million patch cords
flying
all around me, trying to strangle me and take over. I got so confused with
my cables..
"hmm.. is this the aux out1 or aux out2, or is it the trigger from the Bass
drum on my
606?" ... I almost abandoned the thing after a while because i lost track of
what was
what ! I don't really have this problem in the studio because i know where
everything
is, and I use labelled patch bays

anyways, any suggestions on how to make life easier doing this live with an
unfamiliar
setup?

thanks!

paul

a few suggestions (based on many mistakes made that i have learned from).....

decide how much eqpt you need to use and then divide that amount by two.

if you are "free patching" between devices i.e. (606 to fuzzbox to
ring-mod to mixer to...*wait* lets send it to the fibulator...
etc...) you might want to color-code your patch cords w/ tape.

run with the limitations. in the studio its nice to be able to run
everything through everything else but you have a lot longer time to
monkey w/ it.....it helps to have some familiar systems/routings to
work with when you are playing live. keep in mind you will be
devoting some of that precious "listening bandwidth" to your fellow
performers--if you are completely tapped out trying to figure out
what the hell is going on w/ your rig you probably won't be picking
up on what other people are trying to communicate (hopefully they are
doing the same...)

less is more (least is most?).

enjoy

Re: [motm] live with motm

2000-06-23 by Doug Pearson

A very good question ... I've only played live once with my MOTM system,
but I have numerous other times with other modular and/or patchable synths,
so some of that experience is also applicable to MOTM. Also, my
experiences come entirely from "rock bands", some mostly improvisational,
some entirely tight and pre-planned (you should see the set of patchsheets
I had to make for my MS-20 when I was in the Devo tribute band!), some in
between. As a consequence, they may not be as relavent for someone doing a
techno PA (I've never used drum machine synchronization, for instance).

A couple of specific recommendations:
1) Prepatch as much as possible, and take full advantage of the
multiple-inputs (both audio and CV) found on most MOTM modules. Use the
input attenuator knobs to "open" and "close" patches so you don't have to
plug cables in the middle of a set (or the middle of a song). That way,
one song/track/segment may use the FM1 and Audio1 inputs to your -440,
while for the next part, you just turn down those knobs, then turn up the
FM2 and Audio2 & Audio3 knobs, which are prepatched-in from something
entirely different ...

2) As someone else mentioned, use color-coded patch cords. Folks who saw
my SKB mixer case-'o-MOTM at the Bay Area meeting a couple weeks ago may
have noticed the DGS/Deltron plugs I use for my homemade cables that have
space for two little plastic colored rings - with (I think) 8 ring colors
available, that makes (almost?) 64 color-code combinations. VERY nice to
be able to recognize both ends of a cable at a glance. Also, Rat Shack
sells the packages of short right-angle-plug colored cables pretty
inexpensively - I avoid using those for audio, but I don't worry about
using them for gate/trigger/CV.

just a couple things that have worked for me ...

hello all
the infamous "never again" strikes, whenever there are gigs to be done, hangovers to be had , and crazy girls to be pulled, "never again" is watching, waiting...
anyway, so i did an MOTM based gig the other month, so my sum knowledege is thus:
1) try to assign certain modules to certain dedicated functions - eg, i left my 410 filter with stereo spread alone on one fx send with a korg envelope follower modulating it
2) another dead useful application of the #700 router - on another fx send i had the "main" modular running into the #700, here (without automating it) i could easily switch the signal patch over from 420 to 440 filter & vice versa
3) make use of the multiple inputs on filters - again for extra flexibility i patched external audio to input 1, vcos to input 2, noise etc input 3
that's it really, hope that gives you an idea or two...
fortunately, with my new finest quality MDF case painted black, it's just too heavy to lug up the stairs - so never again for me means that i'll not be giging it until i've built a small portable rig (ohbloodyhell...)meanwhile, i just built a chaos oscillator from a circuit diagram on the web - great, now i have a MOTM module that sounds like my Eventide Harmoniser before i had it fixed - ho hum...
cheers

I put two labeled patch bays in one of the SKB cases when I gigged and put
all the mixer I/O through them. It was a breeze. I had separate technical
problems (not with MOTM), but I knew where all the patchcords were.

Also, I buy my cables from Wacky Kovacy, and I have him make the cables with
random colors and heatshrink colors (heatshrink same on each end of a given
cable though). I was at first going to color code cables based on length,
but I went this route because it makes patches *much* easier to trace.

Hosa also makes several lengths of molded patch cables in bright colors.
They're relatively inexpensive and would make great "gigging" cables,
especially because they don't weigh very much. You can hang them around your
neck without wearing out your shoulders (as I've done under 20 lbs. of
switchcraft hardware).

Have a blast!

David.
