I've been asking myself that question for years....;> Had to settle for "satisfied". If 5% of those 3000 buy *anything*, you are doing GREAT. I bought Acrobat 4, but it's no better at compression than 3 was. They need to make that product so that you don't pick a global compression scheme for the document, but rather say "use LZW on THIS graphic" and "Use JPeG on THIS one..." I wrote Adobe and told them that, too. I wonder if compressing it with Winzip & Stuffit would help, offering a PC & Mac version. I'll take another look at the problem, but I wasn't getting anywhere with forcing the file size down. There are a lot of pictures in there. I could compromise their quality, but I was really hoping we could make the catalog look real good in print, better than web JPeG quality.

Speaking of picture quality, almost all the module pics need to be upgraded. The graphics for the 410 and 440 make the others look sick and blurred. While I'm whining, the website needs to have the 440 moved off the news page, and a blurb added for the Lag! Moe

Boy, anything else? <bg> I actually started the process of doing the module faceplates over as high-quality, high contrast GIF files, rather than JPeG, which is an inappropriate compression format for the panels. The GIFs are MANY times finer in detail with no compression artifacts. They print a thousand times better than the JPeGs. They still aren't real small, though-we want people to be able to read the panels, and that level of detail requires a certain minimum of overhead. Enclosed is an example. <<MOTM-110-Panel.GIF>>

Thanks for the info. I wasn't very hopeful, since Acrobat has already compressed them a bit, but it was worth checking. We had some unusually good luck WinZipping TIFFs, so I was hoping against hope that it might do something. Back to the drawing board.

They would certainly be smaller. I'm a big fan of vector over raster.

I know everyone would rather see the real deal but, how about a catalog with vector drawings instead of pictures? This way you could use the catalog for downloads as well as printing with no loss in resolution. Smaller file size too. I drew up vector files of all the modules if you would want to do this. -Nate

You can't really use vector graphics on the web until PNG gets more common. For now, this would just be to try to get the download-able catalog smaller.

The only problem is that the .GIF compression routine is copyright'ed, so you're theoretically supposed to pay whenever you use the compression routine. Search http://www.slashdot.org for details, I don't remember them clearly. At the same time, I highly doubt that the owner of the copyrights is going to search out every "illegal" user and prosecute. Now, as for why Paul S. isn't rich... who knows? I'm getting poorer (and much happier!) every time I order! :> --PBr, reading too much /. recently...

Vectors can be rasterized and exported to gif for web browse-ability, as for the catalog, saving as Encasulated Postscript (EPS) will compress very nicely into a PDF document. -Nate>

Can the average PC read it that way? Normally, it can't read an EPS, but maybe the Acrobat reader does the translation? I've never tested that out. Take it from someone using a PC that has to send files to Mac users on a weekly basis-there* is *no common vector file format. On a PC, WMF works everywhere very well, but there is no way for a Mac to read it. EPS seems to work fine on a Mac, but cannot be read by 99% of PCs and can be problematic on that last percent. (Especially when the person on the other end doesn't know what they are doing, and you might be AMAZED at the amount of people who are totally computer illiterate that buy a Mac and decide to go into desktop publishing. It's just amazing. I spend at least four hours a week, red-faced, screaming into a phone at someone trying to simply explain the difference between raster & vector! I mean, this is their JOB!!. Sorry for venting. Sore spot.) -----Original Message----- From: Nathan Hunsicker [mailto:nate@...] Sent: Friday, 26 May, 2000 12:34 PM To: motm@egroups.com Subject: RE: [motm] How come I'm not rich? Acrobat will read any files imbedded in the PDF. If distiller can distill it, Acrobat reader can read it (except color seperations) -Nate Any other questions on PDF or other file formats , email me privately, so as not to drive other listmembers crazy.
