Another tip: you will get a purer ring mod effect by using inputs with few
of their own harmonics. Try 2 300s with sine waves. If you are ring
modulating audio, use a sine wave for the carrier. Ring modding rich
waveforms like pulse or saw only makes things muddy.

ring modulator comes alive

2000-05-18 by David Bivins

O.k., I'm a big fan of the ring modulator now. I guess I hadn't been putting
hot enough signals into it. Jeff Schmidt (AH member, potential future MOTM
owner) asked me to remix one of his tunes on mp3.com. It's a slight, minimal
techno piece, mostly performed with TR-909 and FR777 (sequencer/monosynth).
He was using the 909 high tom to trigger a Simmons module in his version. I
used the same patterns as he did, but I sent the tom directly into the
MOTM-110 ring modulator, along with a MOTM-300 in the "Y" input. I modulated
the oscillator various ways, and I got the most wonderful sound out of
there. I'm really, really glad I got such a good sound out of it. I was
beginning to wonder...

So if you haven't gotten good use out of the ring mod yet and wish to do so,
crank those inputs!

If you want to hear it, the URL's below. It's called "OSvNS" and the ring
mod comes in around half-way. It's pretty distinctive.

David.

MOTM in the news

2002-02-11 by mate_stubb

Just got my March issue of Electronic Musician in the mail, and lo
and behold, amongst the software reviews is an article
(titled "Modular Mayhem") about list member Dave Trenkel's new album
production, "Dark Lit", for his band Minus. Prominently mentioned is
his trusty MOTM modular, which he uses to process many tracks.

Congrats on the article and the album, Dave!

Wow, cool, I've been on the road for the last week and didn't know the
issue had come out yet! In the interview, we actually talked quite a
bit about the MOTM, it was one of the hooks that he wanted to use for
the article. I gave a lot of examples of how we used the modular to
process tracks, the one he chose was one of the more mundane. But
still, it's way cool and an honor to be in EM, having read it since
very nearly the beginning.

Man, this is killing me, I haven't even seen the final article yet!
Hope it comes today!

BTW, I've been seriously checking out Mike's CD "Absolute Truth" CD
lately, it's algorithmically composed chamber music performed
entirely on MOTM. Utterly wonderful stuff, reminds me of a lot of the
best parts of "classic" electronic music, K. Schulze, (early)
T-Dream, and particularly Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece
Company. I think it's only available from Mike as a CDR, but it's
definitely worth it!

*Sigh* I hate Yahoo. My entire message seems to have been swallowed
up. Let's try again:

Hi Dave -

Hey thanks for the compliments! I'm very glad somebody actually digs
the music besides me. I know it's difficult stuff, but after a few
listens it grows on you.

I was just about to send an email for the URL to your site so I could
pick up a CD, but you beat me to it!

Mike
