420 Questions

How wide is the notch? Does the FREQ knob set the low end or high end or
some other point for this setting?

What are the "6 ways" to connect 2 420s?

How do FM1 and FM2 affect the filter?

Are IN1, IN2 and IN3 all routed through the filter? If so, how do you
minimize the filtering to use it just as a mixer?

Sorry if this is way too basic for some of you...

Actually, there are 12 ways to connect 2 3 mode filters...

The "narrowness" is proportional to the Q setting. FREQ sets the 'center
point' of the Notch.

LP + LP
LP + Notch
LP + HP
HP + HP
HP + Notch
Notch + Notch

They are summing pots for the control voltage. More CV >> cutoff of filter
increases

You can't *right now*. There is a little opening in the panel *begging* for
a MIX OUT jack....hmmmmmm....

But, kind sir, it makes NO difference if you LP + HP or HP + LP. So you
eliminate
all of the "reverse" cases!

True, kind sir, but you miss my point.

Take your six cases, then throw into the mix hooking the two filters up
either in SERIES or PARALLEL.

Gives you totally different sounds!

Two 2 pole LPF in series, tuned to the same frequency = one 4 pole LPF. Same
for HPF. Sharper cutoff slope, different sound.

I'm probably missing something here (what's new?), but can't you just use the
inputs as a mixer in the ordinary way take the Lopass output but use minimum
Q and maximum cutoff freq. (with nothing at the CV inputs)? Wouldn't this be
a simple signal mixer of the type desired?

I also remembered that the Minimoog has no provision for AM in the audio
range on the VCA, and to get audio AM one needs to modulate the filter CV
input with one of the VCOs in the audio range. So maybe you can sell the 420
as a mixer with audio AM capabilities, and as a bonus, a VC filter is thrown
in as well.

Most filters will affect high frequency signals even if you crank the Freq
all the way up. If you are trying to mix midrange audio signals or low
frequency control voltages, no problem. Otherwise, you will probably get
some interaction.
