MOTM - User Profiles?

MOTM - User Profiles?

2000-02-16 by IvanCU@aol.com

I'm going to toss this out onto the MOTM list with the understanding that
Paul certainly has the right to say "take it elsewhere...."

After reading a few comments about other "less mainstream" gear such as the
Future Retro and other items, I realized that the MOTM list is probably one
of the best resources for us Synth-heads (some are Midiots, some analogians,
and some are both like myself; Anamidi?). That said, is there some place
where we can collectively share this information? I appreciated the Future
Retro comments from David; others might have questions about gear that I own
such as the SidStation or old analog drum modules. If we each had a profile
listing our interests, resources, talents, and gear, we could be a great
resource for each other.

Comments?

I've always been interested in what others are up to because, even within
the wacky world of modular synthesis, I think my tastes are a little more
extreme than others, and I've always thought it would be nice to know who
the kindred spirits were on this list. That, plus I'm interested in the
geography of MOTM users... seems there aren't too many of us here in the NE
corner of the US... makes me feel kinda lonely.

I would be willing to add my personal profile
to a collection of the same from other users. The nice
thing about a
personal profile, is that each could contribute only what
they wanted,
leaving the rest, well, err.... personal.

Really? They must be hiding... it seems that whenever people talk about
where they're from, and possible get-togethers, it's always in the Midwest
areas.

Actually, the NJ/NYC area has 12 users, by *far* the largest
concentration!

There is a pretty big concentration of EM people at MIT in
Cambridge, but I don't think they even know about MOTM

If I'm not mistaken, Mr. Pavone is on this list.

I'm in Whitinsville, MA which is between Worcester and Providence. There is
a pretty big concentration of EM people at MIT in Cambridge, but I don't
think they even know about MOTM. Check out this guy for example:

Well, this is a freely open list. The idea here is that all subscribers
would either be MOTM customers, or users, or "thinking" about being owners
/ users. Maybe that's not 100% true. There are certainly other lists
where ALL types of analog synthesis or synth construction are discussed.
For Example, Analog Heaven and Synth DIY. I would hate to see this list
stray too far away from MOTM discussions of other equipment with the
exceptions of:

"What cool features of other equipment might be nice to see in the next
MOTM-000"
            or
"How are you using interfacing X brand do-dad with your MOTM gear."

That's just my $.02 on the subject.

Sure. I think it would be nice. Then I don't have to embarrass myself
asking a BSEE if he has ever soldered before.

Here's mine:

Old fart
Lots of gear
Less talent
<snicker>

Actually I am just joking. I would be willing to add my personal profile
to a collection of the same from other users. The nice thing about a
personal profile, is that each could contribute only what they wanted,
leaving the rest, well, err.... personal.

I'd actually like this forum to be fairly open to off-topic stuff. I think
there's a good bunch of folks here, the general tone of the list is pretty
positive, and there's a large pool of intelligence to draw upon (don't
quite understand the stooge obsession though, I'm fonder of Iggy Pop and
... than the 3 ... :_). I recently unsubscribed from Analog Heaven due to
the volume of posts and the overall tone, and am finding myself much
happier and with more time to devote making music.

Profile to follow...

Dave Trenkel <improv@...>

Musician/recording engineer/multimedia developer (not neccessarily in order
of income)

Corvallis, OR

MOTM: One of each except the patch panel, 2X 110's, 300's, 420's and 800's.

Other instruments: Blacet and Doepfer modulars, Rhodes piano, Nord Lead,
Dx-7 and TX-416, ARP Oddyssey and Axxe, Oberheim SEM, Ibanez 5 and 6 string
basses, 2 accordions, too many stomp boxes.

Music: My main band is a trio called Minus, in which I play bass. I just
uploaded a tune from our forthcoming CD to mp3.com, go to
www.mp3.com/-minus- and check out the tune "AcidFlesh." MOTM content: the
fuzz bass and rhodes were run through the 410 filter in dual rev mode, most
notable on the bass. Also, I ran one of the turntable tracks, playing a
record of didjeridu drones, through the 420 filters. My main musical
interests are the more avante-garde end of fusion (Miles, Herbie Hancock,
Zorn, Frissell, Laswell, etc) and electronic stuff (current listenning
includes a lot of Plastikman, Innerzone Orchestra, Basic Channel, and, the
new Art of Noise tribute to Debussey (awesome album)

Non-musical likes: Coffee, my cats and dog, cooking, hiking.

Dislikes: Microsoft, corporate culture, bad coffee.

BTW, I just found out that my studio is going to be featured in an upcoming
article in the local college newspaper, along with a couple of other local
studios. I'll definitely plug MOTM, the modular is one of the most visually
striking things in the studio, so there'll probablyt be pictures as well.
