Devastating Bass

Devastating Bass

2000-01-31 by David Bivins

In my continuing quest for loud, obnoxious sounds to use in my crappy techno
music, I came across this:

TB-303 CV out -> MOTM-420-1 (self-oscillating) 1v/oct in
MOTM-420-1 out -> MOTM-120 (square) A in
TB-303 (sawtooth) headphone out -> MOTM 120 (square) B in
MOTM-120 out -> MOTM-420-2 (hi pass, cutoff low, res high) in
MOTM-420-2 out -> MOTM-110 in
TB-303 gate out -> MOTM-800 in
MOTM-800 neg out -> MOTM-420-2 reversed FM1 in
MOTM-800 pos out -> MOTM-110 CV in

You get a solid, buzzy bass out of the second 420 in high pass mode, but the
resonance adds a very deep rumble to the whole thing. Sounds like someone's
coming down the beanstalk for you!

I was inspired by a recent Analogue Heaven post talking about using the
Yamaha CS resonant filters in high pass mode for bass.

I know, I know. I need to buy a couple oscillators, 'cause I'm not doing
anything special here. But it sounds so good!

unfortunately i only have one #420 so my version came out as follows:
>
MC202 CV out > #420 v/oct in (freq 2 or 3 / self oscillating / fm1 -1)

#420 out > #120 A in (square)
MC202 sawtooth out via headphones > #120 B in (square / #120 in cross mode)
#120 out > #110 VCA in
MC202 gate into #800 gate in (attack 3 / rel 3)
#800 pos out > #110 CV in
#800 neg out > #420 FM1

now tune a #300 to the source sequence
multiple the source gate into a frequency divider (i built one myself and
i'm still suprised it works) put a suitable division into the lfo sync in
then:
lfo pulse out > #700 cv in
#300 sine out > #700 input a or b
#700 out x > #420 audio in (mix 8 upwards)

congratulations - you have now made something that sounds annoyingly like a
DJ on a bad scratch day
things went horribly wrong when i started messing around with the S&H...
amazing what you can do with a modular isn't it..?

cheers
