Help with pots...MOTM format.

Help with pots...MOTM format.

2009-07-17 by earthtodylan2000

Hi,

I have a question about replacement pots for my Blacet Time Machine. It's in MOTM format. And I HAVE posted this on the Blacet list to no avail...and also contacted John Blacet himself who didn't seem to have the time to help...actually felt a little blown off actually...but whatever...I like his stuff too.

I need to replace all the ones that are soldered to the board...they are all 5ok lin. They all had the back blown out of them after a show so I want to get something a little more bulletproof and stronger since I tend to travle with the thing.

Anyone build one of these? Do you have Mouser part numbers of a replacement? Will the Spectrol ones that Paul uses fit on the Time Machine?

Fantastic sounding delay I must add...like it more than my Moog Super Delay.

 Thanks,

 David Scott Stone

ah yes the perennial pot question. Spectrols are gone pretty much,
though Paul has a newish supplier of equivalents from the UK again
IIRC.

IMHO the Bourns ones are at least as hardy and you can still get the
91A1A series from Mouser, but they're not cheap.

the 100k linear part is - 91A1A-B28-A20

seems like nobody uses nice pots, hence the cost when you do.

Bournes pots are cheaper at Allied. I just bought a bag of the 50K linear ones:

Allied# 754-2131
Bournes# 91A1A-B24-B18L

oo thanks for the info.

must stock up while i can...

i find the spectrols have a nicer feel and the metal shaft is nice,
but the back is fragile IME.

Re: [motm] Help with pots...MOTM format.

Hi -

I had the exact same problem you have. I shipped my time machine (motm format - the kind blacet himself sold - I built it from a kit) to a potential buyer, and the pcb flexed enough in shipping to rip the pots apart. Thankfully that's all that happened, and it was an easy fix otherwise. Pcb mounted pots are fine for modules that aren't going to travel much. That flimsy little bracket that blacet used just isn9;t enough. The ones Paul uses are a lot better, but even they make me nervous - fortunately my modular never moves much.

When I did the repair, I decided to go ahead and spend the $$$ and get the same pots that were in it previously. Mouser has them, part # 594-249-7503. At about 12$ each, highway robbery. These are the spectrol 249's, same as some of the ones Paul uses. I used some of John Lofflink's pot chiclets, and ran little wires between the pcb and the pot chiclets, so now the pots are separate from the pcb - much safer. You could use alpa pots - the 16mm ones, 313-1000F-50K - I think they'll fit - at 1.38$ each, much more reasonable, but you'll need to do the flying wire thing - which you should probably do in any case.

Anyway, it9;s definitely fixable, and after I did it I was playing with it and decided I still really liked it, and decided not to sell it again (the first buyer got cold feet after this incident).

David,

Not to get into the middle of something here, but I also subscribe to the
Blacet list and I've no record of your posting coming through. I archive all
messages and have checked back to 1/1/2009...

" Really? You have the time to make me a liar?"

- Not my intention at all.

"What is the point if this?"

- The internet is not 100% reliable, I was merely trying to point out that
at least one person on the list (myself) did not get your message, and that
may explain why you didn't get a response.

" Why don't you keep on looking through the archives poindexter..."

- I'm not aware of an online archive for the Blacet mail list - that's why I
archive the messages.

Gentlemen. Please. The Blacet ml has been up and down quite a bit recently, mostly down. So it's quite possible the message posted there went into a black hole. Or time machine. Or something.
