The best place to buy/sell are boards that get the most exposure:

www.muffwiggler.com

www.modularsynth.net

www.harmonycentral.com

Filter recomendations?

2009-01-28 by Ross Stapf

I'll need to pick up a MOTM format filter soon. I have some in other formats, but none in 5U. My favorates in the other formats are the Mankato I have in frac and the cwejman dual mode and livewire Frequensteiner in euro. However I'm looking at finding something a little different for my MOTM format filter. I've especially been looking at the MOTM 410 and the MOTM 440, but welcome any other suggestions as well.
I'm mostly doing Noise/Drone in my solo shows/recordings, and also playing with a Doom Metal band doing drones and Hawkwind like psychedelic sounds.

It's hard to go wrong with either the 440 or 480 - they're my most used filters. The 410 is unique, but a bit of a one-trick-pony (I've only had one for a few weeks, so don't trust me on this). The 485 might be something to consider also.

The 410 is one of my favorites, it can also do nice stereo pans. (It's a
good trick! :) But if you only own one MOTM filter, make it a 440 and you
won't go wrong.

I'd agree!

But then I'd add "who would bother building a modular and have only
one MOTM filter?!"

The 485 is gritty and if you take it to follow the GX-1, the studio electronics crowd find it nasally and aggressive. I believe the GX-1 was their design inspiration for the NovaMusik CODE. But if I'm not mistake, it doesn't self-oscillate, so it might not meet your droning & doom metal needs. If the MOTM samples aren't good enough for you to evaluate, look for GX-1 samples or samples of the CODE from SE. You can also check out the samples of their CS-80 filter, which is also the design inspiration of the 480. It's another favorite. But I've never heard more people rave about the 440. Of course, I want them all, but I'm usually broke.

I don't think harmonycentral allows people to advertise stuff for sale.
Modularsynth.net mostly consists of deadbeats. Don't know about the other
one. Perhaps Gearslutz is another place to try.

I have all of the MOTM filters. I probably use the 440 most and after
that the 480 that I've built as a dual module. I use the 410 quite a
bit, too, but it is more of a post-processing effect. If you have to
get only one, the 480 offers more variety of sound than the 440. Either
one is highly recommended.

Hi Ross!

I’ve only tried the 440 and 490 so far and both are great but I think the 440 is ‘greater’ . . at least on most days! ;-) I have a 485 on the way though too.

Not a Synth Tech item but I’m really impressed with the STG Sea Devils filter from what I’ve heard from his demo and plan on getting one of those at some point. It may very well be that STG is just talented at making interesting demos and the sounds he created could be done with any low pass filter but . . . .I’ll get one just in case! Heh.

Yeup, based on what you are looking for you probably should get a MOTM-440 AND MOTM-485 AND STG Sea Devils filter! (where is that Muff Wiggle hyper emoticon when ya need one?! ;-)

I've had excellent luck there buying from loopcycle (Hans) and electroholic (Henrik) and maybe one other guy . . . but the rest of those dudes may totally suck for all I know! :-)

>Don't know about the other one. (Muff Wiggler)

Muff's is THE bestest synth forum!!! I sez it so it must be true! (join up everyone! ;-)

>Perhaps Gearslutz is another place to try.

I've had good luck there. There is so much traffic there though and items get added or bumped up so much that you might miss some good stuff if you don't take the time to do searches on specific items instead of just browsing.

OK, I did it - a FS board for synths -WAS: A 'for sale' sub-board for MOTM?

2009-01-30 by Paul Wagorn

OK, just about every synth-type list I'm on eventually has a thread about "hey we should set up a classifieds".

Sooo… I decided to set one up for all the lists I belong to. The idea is that we can sell our gear all in one place (hey and maybe even avoid some cross-posting!).

Anyways, I *just* set it up, so there is literally nothing for sale yet, so if you feel like it, go & post your forsale items there:

www.SynthGear.com

If people start using it, I'll spend some time and make it all pretty :)

cheers,

Paul

Someone once advised to measure each resistor before putting it in the
board. This is great advice for a lot of reasons.
