MOTM-650 and microtuning

2006-10-30 by Alex Pi

Hello
Anyone tried the tuning feature of the 650?
I read in the synthesizers.com faq that if you need more than about
36 tones per octave,
the tuning will be off due to the nature of analog oscillator
tracking, and that you should use a digital synthesizer..
Is this the case with MOTM too?

The statement about 36 tones per octave requiring digital makes no sense.
Nearly all digital synths track to 1-2 cent accuracy, and MOTM VCOs can
match them over the most useful musical range.

The short answer is no.

The longer answer is there are a possible 514 steps per octave in a 1V/Oct
scale, and I believe the laser trimmed DAC Paul used had less than a half
a bit of precision error.
