OFF: meeting of the modular makers

OFF: meeting of the modular makers

1999-12-10 by Doug Pearson

While I wait for my -320 kit to arrive, here's a quick story I feel
compelled to share with my fellow module-builders ...

Last night, the band that my flatmate & her boyfriend play in were at a
bar/music club in downtown Oakland (the only club in downtown Oakland where
rock bands play). I arrived just in time to catch their set, but they said
- "Doug, it's too bad you weren't here earlier. We met this guy named Rex
who says he builds modular synthesizers. We told him that you build
modules, and he asked if you needed a job." Nice to know that my work on
MOTM has made me more "employable"! (They probably didn't make it clear to
him that I'm only building modules from *kits*, even if they are the best
synth module kits ever!) I guess that's a healthy indicator of the state
of the analog modular synth business, since when I visited Serge HQ about 3
years ago (back when your only choice for modulars was them or Doepfer),
they definitely weren't in need of any help.

I guess that's good news all around: the demand is still there.
