Balancing amps for non-modular synths.

Balancing amps for non-modular synths.

2006-05-09 by Matthew Hiscock

Hi all,

Just wondering: what do you guys do to integrate synths that use unbalanced output levels into your modular?

In my case I've got a sampler and a Oberheim Matrix-6r that make me adjust my input levels (I have a console-less studio) whenever I want to use them with my MOTM filters (not the 420 but the 410 and soon the 490).

I know there is a dotcom module that does this, but I imagine that this would be a fairly easy DIY project. And, naturally, there are lots of outboard balancing amps out there.

Is there anyone in a similar situation?

Matthew

Hey Matthew -

Do you have one of Paul's mixers? You can use that to attenuate a
signal...

Attenuate I can do already - I want to boost.

My sampler and Matrix are both set at unbalanced (-10) and I want to take them up to balanced (+4), like my modular.

I know the MOTM filters can handle unbalanced levels just fine, but I'd rather have the boosting before and not after the filtering. I also want to save the trouble of switching the -10/+4 switch on my soundcard.

Would something like this do the trick for you?

http://www.bswusa.com/proditem.asp?item=LLS

They make an 8-channel version as well.

That's what I need. And it's pretty cheap.

Or I guess I could diy one up, something like this:

I believe that one is just a step-up and not a step-down, which is really all I need.

Attenuate I can do already - I want to boost.

My sampler and Matrix are both set at unbalanced (-10) and I want to
take them up to balanced (+4), like my modular.

I know the MOTM filters can handle unbalanced levels just fine, but
I'd rather have the boosting before and not after the filtering. I
also want to save the trouble of switching the -10/+4 switch on my
soundcard.

Re: [motm] Re: Balancing amps for non-modular synths.

2006-05-09 by xamboldt

Just to be clear on nomenclature, whether a signal is balanced or
unbalanced doesn't necessarily have anything to do with its level.
After all, the signal from most microphones are balanced, but are far
below +4 dB. Likewise you can easily have unbalanced signals at +4dB
and higher (like in modular synths), or lower (like an electric
guitar signal).

A balanced cable is one where there are 3 conductors, one of which is
ground and the other two are carrying the signal, but 180 degrees out
of phase with each other. This is so that any noise picked up in the
cable run can be cancelled out by inverting the out of phase signal
and mixing it with the in-phase signal.

An unbalanced cable is just 2 conductors - ground and signal.

Both of these assume we're talking about mono signals.

Hope this clears things up,
Chris

Rather than deal with a matchbox, I would recommend a small mixer.
Overall, you will get much more value for your money. I use a Mackie
1202 all the time. Which go for around $175 on the used market.
It's a matchbox, a mic pre, a headphone amp, a mixer, a feedback
control for looping effects, etc. It even does FET distortion and
has a 2-band EQ. And unlike a matchbox, when used as an input for
your filters and other modules, you can control the amount of gain,
which is very important for what you want to do.

Also, Blacet has an instrument processor:
http://www.blacet.com/IO.html. My bias is to keep it modular :)

The Blacet is a possibility, but doesn't the VCA just attenuate, not boost?

If it does boost, then perhaps I'll have to re-examine this whole thing....

RE: [motm] Re: Balancing amps for non-modular synths.

I thought Paul was discussing something like this as a possible MOTM
module a while ago, I/O to interface between different signal
formats...was I dreaming that?

Also, Blacet has an instrument processor:
http://www.blacet.com/IO.html. My bias is to keep it modular :)

- or for a mere three times that amount - get an Onyx 1220:

http://www.mackie.com/products/onyx1220/index.html

- mucho better sonics, kind of a baby Crest/Midas - linear faders, good
sounding bypassable eq with a sweepable mid on the mono channels, nice
pres, balaced direct outs - even on the stereo channels (on dsub, though), etc.

- makes a decent OTB (outside the box) mixer for DAW stems, too - just add
an FMR (or better) compressor (RNC, RNLA) and shake well. I got one at the
end of last year when the $399 FireWire option was a free addition.

- very nice stuff for the money.

VCA does boost and attenuate. I actually use am Oakley EFG Deluxe;
alas, it is no longer available. It works nicely, and I understand
the Blacet is just as nice.

If it does boost, then perhaps I'll have to re-examine this whole thing....

The A, B,and C channels of the VCA2200 max at unity. The D channel is
adjustable to amplify up to 10x.

You might also look at the Blacet IO2225. It's a single channel amp that
does 10x, 100x, and 500x. You won't need the higher settings for another synth,
but it has envelope follower (straight out and a lagged out, gate and trigger
out), if you have a need for that.
