Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I report that Larry and his wife Anne
were killed Sunday when a car pulled out in front of the motorcycle
they were riding.

They were returning from a weekend biking trip to Wisconsin, where my
wife Dianne and I had joined them. When I didn't get an email from
him, we called the house and got the terrible news.

I never met Larry in person. In the Internet age I tend to meet people of similar interests via Blogs etc. That is how I met Larry, through the MOTM group. I immediately liked Larry, trusted Larry and enjoyed Larry's sense of humour, modesty and helpfulness.

He will be missed.

All of my peace, light and love to his family and friends, Greg

This is truly terrible news.

I never met Larry in person, but he meant so much to this group

And I\u2019m sure a lot of others.

He appeared to be one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet

And was always very straight up and down when it came to sending stuff to me in the UK from the states.

He will be sorely missed by everyone on these groups

I cannot imagine how much he will be missed by his close friends family etc.

I am completely gobsmacked by the news

A real injustice.

What terrible, terrible news. Even as a somewhat recent MOTM user, it was
abundantly clear to me what an important person Larry was to the community.
Not only for the great products and resources he provided, but also for his
kindness and willingness to help complete strangers.

Just a few months ago, I mentioned on the list how I had destroyed a part of
a module while assembling it, and never having been in contact with one
another before, Larry wrote me back privately offering words of
encouragement and a story about a similar mistake he had made. I'm sure this
is just one of the most minor of the countless examples of his kindness and
generosity of spirit.

My thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends.

This is very sad news.

I was fortunate enough to have met Larry in person a couple of years
ago. He had come up to Calgary for a few days to attend a wedding. He
had some spare hours and came over to my place where we talked synths
and then headed over to the Cantos keyboard museum for a tour. It was
a short visit, but we had a good time.

For those who never met Larry, he really was a great guy, very kind,
helpful, and generous to everyone. We have lost a good one. He will
be missed.

Re: Larry Hendry

This is really sad news. Really sad news. I have many Stooge
cables, panels, and two of Larry's modules. He even sent me serial
number tags for his modules.

I just looked at my last email from him about my cable order. I
saved it away. I can't believe this.

I think about the all the fun I have had with all this modular synth
stuff in recent time. A lot of joy comes from the people in our
group. We synth geeks are a small family and we lost one of the
best people I have encountered.

Dang, what a sad day. I am really freaked out now. How many of us
have benefitted from all the Stooge activities? Think about how
many modules, cabinets, cables, etc. we all have because of the
Stooge efforts.

I am really going to miss Larry, a really fine honest guy. My
thoughts to his family at this time.

I feel very sad. I only met Larry and Anne one time, when they came

some motorcycling that day. We toured part of the Blue Ridge Parkway

(Please pardon the cross-posting.)

What can I say? Larry was truly one of the most helpful guys on all the
synth lists, and just a super nice guy. I never saw him write a bad thing
about anyone. He'll definitely be missed by many.

Of course, everyone knows all that. There's nothing that I can add, but I
had to add my voice to these virtual memorial services. I never met him, but
I thought I eventually would have the pleasure.

When I first read about this, I just kind of went "No, no..." I'm still
reeling.

It's funny how an ordinary guy can affect so many people. Even my wife
(who's not a synth person) knew of Larry. His surviving family must be
pleasantly surprised by the number of his online friends, he has helped so
many people. Be sure to sign the guest book, folks.

OMG... I cannot believe it...

Larry was a great friend to us each individually, as well as to our
wonderful little community. I'm SO glad we met in person at NAMM, so
that I have a personal memory.

As someone else said here, Larry is "all over" my modular synth, and I
will always associate a very special part of my favorite pastime with
him, his good humor, shared love of the music and electronics, and
much more.

My sincere condolences to the Hendry family, and to all of us whose
lives (and instruments) he touched.

Life is so very fragile-- Let our good memories of our friend be
strong and endure.

What sad news to hear.

He contributed so much to the synth community, and gave so much of his

I'm going to miss his intelligent comments in the forum, his how-tos

Larry's generous support and encouragement immediately convinced me

I can't add much to the outpouring here except to say that it's a
shock, all the more so because Larry was more than just an email
address on a list, he really reached out and helped me on more than
one occasion. I have a box of his cables here that I haven't even
had a chance to use yet, it's going to be rather poignant when I do.

One of the ways he helped was through his great www.wiseguysynth.com
site. I hope someone can grab whats there before it goes away, as
there's a lot there that should stay in the community (like the step
by step module building pages!).

Is there room to host some of that at the synthtech site?

I, like many others here, was deeply saddened to hear of Larry's
passing. I've known Larry for eight or nine years now through our
mutual appreciation of the Korg DSS-1 sampler and analog synths.
While I haven't been in touch with Larry as much these past few years
since moving out to the left coast, we still kept in touch via phone
and email, as well as the annual AHMW pilgrimage. Larry was a great
all around guy and always eager to lend a hand, and I did likewise
where I had ability.

I hadn't planned on making any public comments on this or other lists,
however I must say I was appalled at the behaviour of a few dozen MOTM
list subscribers, as well as their synth-diy and AH counterparts, when
instead of offering condolensces to Jim Hendry and family, and
business partner Dave Bradley and wife, these individuals chose to
mirror Larry Hendry's extensive website immediately upon Dave's
announcement of Larry's passing.

I will continue to host Larry's site unless instructed to do otherwise
by Dave or Larry's son Jim. It is unconscionable that folks would
think of themselves before offering condolences. Not only am I
saddened by Larry's departure, I was dissappointed by the selfishness
of some of the folks I previously respected in this and the other
synth and diy communities.

Same here. Yesterday I tried to split up my message for the guestbook
(it was something close to 400 characters and I considered that short)
but that failed.
So I took the liberty and sent the original text to Jim and Marcus via
e-mail.

I will miss my friend and our friend Larry. I'm so glad I got to
know him via emails, phone calls, visits to his studio and trips to
the Analogue Heaven Midwest Gathering. I was so glad to know someone
else into modulars and synths. He was unique, huh? Not only was he
into a rare field of endeavor, but he was a rare friend to all that
he met in that field. Here is perhaps one way that Larry's
philosophy of life might be expressed:

Find what you really like to do. Become really good at it. Simplify
and stay focused. Find as many people as you can who like to do the
things you do. Make them your friends. Make them your best friends. Repeat.

Fred

I'm not sure of how his site is being hosted now, but I can host his site
(or a mirror to help ensure it stays up) if needed.

Larry Hendry

2006-10-12 by mbedtom

When I heard that Larry and Anne passed away, I was beyond stunned.
At the wake, I cried like a baby. I could not bear to attend the
funeral so I didn't. Somehow, the pain was much bigger than I could
ever imagine. It took a few days before I figured out why.

We don't choose our family. Like them or not, you have to put up with
crazy aunt Bessie and "strange" uncle Tony. Our friends are people we
have chosen to like purely from some resonance we share. Friendship
is 100% voluntary with no automatic or expected feelings attached.
That makes our friends very special people and quite unlike family.
They are beyond family in many ways. When we lose such friends, we
have lost much. Each of us though, has been enriched by having been
able to call them a "friend". Larry was my friend.

Peace.
Tom Farrand
