Attenuators and voltage sources

Attenuators and voltage sources

2005-07-27 by Greg Amann

So now that I have been fiddleing with my modules for a bit I find the
need for 2 things:

1.- knobs to attenuate things like modulation sources. I could be
attenuating both CV or audio. Do I use log or linear taper pots?
100K OK? Any suggestions, circuits? There seems to be a bunch of
stuff oot on the 'net but I thought it would be a good idea to ask
fellow MOTMizers.

2.- a voltage source where I can get from say -5V to +5V with the
swing of a knob. I am led to believe that PS decoupling is very
important in this application. Any suggestions, circuits?

It makes me giggle a bit to realize that the complex things like a VCO
that tracks linearly from DC to 37.5 terrahertz is a slam-dunk but the
little niggly bits like cables and silly like tweaky circuits are
missing from my rig. Here is an icon to depict me giggling ---> :-P

Greg,

Unless I'm mistaken, for #1, The MOTM 830 Audio/CV mixer is what you want.
And for #2, Tony Allgood (Oakley Sound) might still have some Control 3
boards available. I bought 2 to have a straight CV source in my system
like what you are asking for.

audio = log 50K or 100K OK
CV = lineat 25K to 100K OK

Sorry but they have all gone. It would have done the trick too.

Are you actually going out of the modular scene? If so maybe you could provide schematics and
instructions for those who may need this sort of thing. For a fee of course.

I for one would be happy to pay whatever Tony thinks
is fair for the right to build personal-use modules
from the schematics, part lists, board layouts, and
other documentation for his great designs. I know it
would have to be on a no-support basis for it to make
sense for Tony.

This kind of stuff is just ultra simple op amp circuits and ohms law.  Pick up any book (even the cheap paperbacks at Radio Shack) on Op amps and you will be quickly making these on your own.

Larry (making a quick 10 minute entrance).  I'll try to get to all the e-mails sometime tomorrow.  Long day, I'm off to bed.

I have to say that it was with a heavy heart that I learned of
Tony's retirement from the module production game. I wonder whether
it is still plausible for you to produce the boards a la Ken Stone.
I don't know whether it's feasible or worth your time, but by gosh,
I was just getting my modular project going when this RoHS thing
came around and bit me in the bottom.

This is an apology for using bandwidth.  I asked a question 2 days ago to which I had the solution already, but forgot.  I have since built up my MOTM 830 and now a a CV source in the rig.  Duuuuh...

Quick source of DC in a standard MOTM system:

Take the output of a spare MOTM-800 EG, unplug any Gate or Trigger
inputs, and vary the SUSTAIN knob - you'll get 0 to approx. 5 volts at
the output.

Plug that into a MOTM-830 mixer with reversible gain, and you now have
a nice buffered positive or negative DC offset voltage to apply
anywhere you want.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank John in
public for this sweet tutorial!
This is very very helpful for us newbies, particularly
beacuse his article goes into the little details and
explains them so well (like the ratio of R2/R3 and why
R1 is there)!

Thanks so much John!!

With Best Wishes,

Dino

Not my work. Just common simple stuff right out of Forrest Mimms op amp
book from Radio Shack, and information from the 1000 stupid questions I
asked Paul.

Certainly not. Then I'd have to do work. :-)
