S1 comparison

S1 comparison

2005-06-03 by Greg Amann

I cruise the net looking for cool stuff 'cause it's cheaper than a
boat or a cottage and I came across the CWEJMAN SOUND S1 semi-modular
synth for $3K. It gets high accolades from users. Here is the module
list:

FRONT PANEL
1 master controller
1 LFO
1 mixer
3 oscillators
2 filters
1 ring modulator
1 noise generator
2 ADSR generators
1 output amplifier

If we were to buy MOTM stuff to replace this functionality it would
look something like:

320 VCLFO: $160
830 Mixer: $200
300 VCO x 3: $990
420 VCF: $220
440 VCF: $260
101 Noise / S&H: $190
800 ADSR x 2: $220
190 uVCA: $200
900 Power Supply: $160

Total cost: $2600

This is obviously not an apples-to-apples comparison. We have no
practical way to control the MOTM rig, no case, possibly the purchaser
is not handy with a soldering iron, or space is at a premium. And
shipping that much MOTM is obviously more $ than the S1.

I just thought it was an interesting comparison.

The correct response is "I'll take one of each...."
