MOTM-650/ PC Midi Cards/seq-software

2005-02-27 by Don Ojeman

Ok.. I am going with the MOTM-650.
Now my next challenge is what manufacture out there
will be compatable Midi interface pci cards to work
with MOTM-650 and software seq. and other cool
products I can apply scoring, Keyboard Controllers,
Studio logic, Kurzweil PC2X.

Thanks..

a) Use a USB interface. They tend to have better software support as the USB
drivers are easier to write for both XP and OSX. I use an Edirol 2-port thing
from www.zzounds.com that works flawlessly on both Mac and PC.

b) as far as sequencing software goes, it depends on how "deep" you want to go.
You have giant ones (Logic), mid-range (CakeWalk) and the abstract (Numerology).

I've been using cakewalk pro audio 8 for years, and aside from a few
missing features and weird (buggy) audio support (in my experience),
it's actually quite capable. If you're looking for cakewalk these days,
though, you'll need to find the program called 'Sonar,' as that's what
cakewalk's been renamed to, at least in the 'full-workstation' versions.

And don't overlook the budget priced Power Tracks Pro for sequencing.

Yup, I've been using Cakewalk since its DOS days. I use Sonar 4
Producer Edition: if Paul is calling Logic giant, then so is Sonar.
Another one to consider is Ableton Live 4 - nice MIDI implementationa
nd it will seamlessly add loopage, too. The now-defunct Techno Toys
Seq 808 is the best (IMO) simple software step sequencer for Windows.

My Kyma is BAD ASS at MIDI, too.

I live in Sicily but I was in new Jersey in Parsippany (?)when I
purchased at "Long & Mc Quade" Cakewalk 1.00 for DOS back in 1988
for 100$, and actually I'm still using Sonar. Just a romantic report.

Voyetra Sequencer Plus, is another favorite of mine. Running in beautiful
B/W DOS it's one of the fastest sequencer programs I know of.
How about a Cynthia Style PC behind a MOTM panel running Voyetra? That would
be pretty sexy.

I second that Mike! However Kyma is a bit shy with only one MIDI port. I
keep running into problems trying to split the signal to many times.

MAX MSP is not too bad either in the "fun with MIDI" category. Again, a
Cynthia Mac panel with MAX wouldn't hurt =)

I just recently was given a voyetra sequencer plus junior disk, along with a pile of old midi
interfaces, from a teacher of mine and assumed it was junk. Maybe I should check it out.

You can download latest Voyetra for free at

http://www.voyetra.com/site/kb_ftp/340ftp.asp

Voyetra is a solid no frills reliable MIDI sequencer running under DOS (no
mouse).

Cheers!
