Module delivery times & solder fumes

2005-02-07 by eric f

Perhaps it was a bad idea for Larry et al to poke at Jay given that we're now being deluged with one line retorts. Posting greivances is fine, but being reminded of one individual's issue over and over and over is pretty useless especially when one gets the impression that the individual isn't taking any other steps to remediate his/her issue.

I am thrilled to report that both modules I ordered this year, my first MOTM undertaking, shipped within the two week timeframe. I have spent many hours petting the faceplate and need only to get a proper workspace.

The space I can use in the basement, however, is unventilated. I could use a fan to push fumes out the door, but it's February and I'm in Chicago... Does the assembly process create a lot of fumes and does anyone handle this is a creative way? In the apartment is out of the question, so...

cheers,
eric

Yes it does. The fumes are not good for you, I recomend investing in a
proper solder fume hood and using it. Hakko makes one you can position
over
the work area which is just a fan with a filter. You can also make one
with a vacum and some fittings from http://modularhose.com/

I've always some sort of ventilation where I work but to me the fumes
are not that bad. I've don't a ton of TT patchbay work in the past -
including reworking several patchbay (de-soldering and re-soldering
every single wire) and that's the only time I've ever used a device to
deal with the fumes. What I have is a little fan with a special filter
in the front that sucks the fumes through it. Works great but I've
never felt the need to break it out for MOTM work.

Oh, don't worry. It's been a sporting event for quite some time. It's kind
of like "whack a mole." No need to pick up the mallet until his head pops
out of the sand. It migrates between the extremes of civil disobedience to
me adding jay's e-mail address to my block senders list seeing if I can keep
up with the new ones faster than he can create them. We're just having fun.
Right Jay?

For solder fume removal, I made a vent system from leftover clothes
dryer vent pipe, a window-mount vent kit and a 4" fan; the whole thing is
maybe 18" in length given my lab window is right behind the bench.
