Pass through holes?

Pass through holes?

2005-01-14 by sduck409

So I was soldering up the prestuffed resistors on my 480 this evening
(mmm...prestuffed! I could get used to this luxury...) and I had this
nagging question that I thought might be apropriate for this board. I
noticed this pcb has lots of pass through holes, or whatever those
little holes are called. Some of the kits have instructions to seek
out and fill these holes, and some of the kits don't (the 480
quick-kit doesn't mention them). My guess is that it has something to
do with who manufactures the board, and/or the board design. Does
anyone have any further insight on this? Should I just be filling them
willy-nilly? Just for the heck of it I filled some of them on the 480
board, but there are a LOT of them - getting them all would be a large
undertaking.

a) the proper term is 'via holes'.

b) yes, you should solder them on *all kits*, even when in my old age I forget
to tell you (because it's "automatic" for me to do so, just like I don't have a
specific instruction to "First turn on your soldering iron.")

I solder them all (via holes).

Woops - that would explain a lot.

Solder-fill all the vias (pass-though holes) with the "no-clean" solder.
Don't use the washable flux solder for this.

Vias are such a freaking nightmare; they are the cause of more
motherboard failures than anything else. Board makers that allow the
soldermask to flow over over unsoldered vias are just asking for trouble.

Scott, Why no clean? I have soldered all of my vias just prior to the last
board wash and used washable flux.

It is probably OK, but if any flux is left inside the solder it might
eventually eat into the via.

Can you explain what I have to do to make the correct procedure?
Sometimes I fill with too much solder, and I feel a bump, but I wonder
if I should remove the solder and refill,
thanks
