Modular Synth Comparison Table

Modular Synth Comparison Table

1999-11-01 by Fred Becker

I have compiled a table that lists every module put out by the major
modular manufacturers. It is a work in progress at the moment, but if
anyone would like a copy, I can forward it. If the list here would like me
to post it right to the list, I could do that too, but don't want to take
up bandwidth and storage unnecessarily.

Currently the table shows every module put out by these major modular
manufacturers:

MOTM
Moog
Polyfusion
EMU
Serge
Buchla
Doepfer
Evos

When I have time and the whim strikes again, I will add these manufacturers:

Aries
Arp 2500
CMS
Digisound
Fenix
Modcan
Paia
Process Electronics
Project Electronic
Roland System 700
Roland System 100M
Synton
Total Technology
Technosaurus

I created it as a table in a Word document, preferring that over Excel
since text wrap is available within a cell in a Word table. It lists the
module titles in the rows, and manufacturers in the columns. Each cell
simply lists the module part number. As I add more manufacturers, the
number of columns will increase. Extra rows are added when a manufacturer
has a unique module title. Future data could also include the module price
below each module number, and the date of introduction or dates of
production, and possibly the quantity produced if we should ever learn that
one. But mainly it is a tool to see and compare what kinds of things have
been pursued by the various makers.

The module rows in my table are grouped in broad categories, that currently
are as follows:

Oscillators
Filters
Timbre
Amplifiers
Modulators
Modifiers
Sequencing
Utility
Midi to CV
Controllers
Cabinets.

When finished, I will send this to Music Machines and Synth Zone and Peter
Forest for their use. I also intend for it to be a reference for future
brainstorming on module ideas by anyone, but most importantly: YOU. A LOT
of modules have been designed already as can be seen by the nine-page
table. If you are interested in a copy of the file, Version 1.0, or want
it posted to the list, let me know.

Text Wrap is available in Excel, too. When it comes to tables, there's not
much, if anything, that Word can do that Excel can't.

Select cells, right-click, select "Format Cells," "Alignment," and check
the "Wrap text" box.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
