Trouble with Panels

Trouble with Panels

2004-06-30 by Paul Schreiber

I get most of my front panels/brackets from a local supplier (free shipping, via
my car). For the last 4 years, the price has held steady, and delivery is 3-4
weeks. *Mostly* 3 weeks.

I send over a order for nearly 400 panels, 50pr of rails and 300 brackets (not
shabby). Here is what I get back, in a nutshell.

a) delivery times are now 8-10 weeks

b) Steel has gone up from 22 cents/lb to 68 cents/pound (3X!!!) The MOTM-19A
rails and the brackets are steel (gulp).

c) aluminum has gone from $1.22/lb to $1.64/lb (35% increase).

So across the board, my front panel cost has increased $4/panel and the brackets
about 80 cents. Rails went up $9/pair!!!!

What does this mean to you, gentle reader?

#1: I have pulled out 1/2 of all the available panels for use with assembled
orders.

#2: the kits that will NOT ship until I get more panels are: 101, 300.

#3: kits with less than 10 panels left are: 190, 320, 800, 700

#4: rails are going to increase to $49/pr.

Nothing I can really do about it. I guess I'll lose about $1800 profit, and the
above kits will not ship until Sept.

Wheee......... :(

Stooge related news bulletin (for immediate press release):

"Official bracket supplier for Synthesis Technology MOTM Micro-series
modules, Stooge Products, Inc., ships 50% of large bracket order to Synth
Tech today only 15 hours after the order was placed without cost increase."

Tomorrow or Friday, I will find out if I will be hit with a price increase
for re-stocking brackets. I have been verbally told no increase. I'll
believe it when I see it in writing. :)

Just to let all the complainers know, Paul is not bringing this up
to increase his profit. These price increases on metals are real.
I own a business that manufactures metal products (my day gig.)
We have seen the same increases in steel and aluminum. In fact, I'm
surprised Paul's supplier's steel prices are that low. We buy
hundreds of tons and that is virtually the same price we are paying.

If you want to assign blame for this, blame the Chinese.
They are buying steel at a tremendous rate and the mills can't keep
up. The Chinese are also buying scrap steel and having it shipped
to China, causing a shortage of scrap in the states, which also
contributes to the price rise.

The Chinese are also to blame for the high gas prices for the same
reason.

Let's not blame Paul.
