Hi list,

did anyone of you ever try the Sherman Filterbank 2?

I love filters, and if this thing has it's own special sound
I might get me one.

I have the first version which is almost the same except the second version has
a few more control options. It is really fun. It is easiest to set it up with
an MOTM-300 and you have a little many synth.

I suggest making sure you have all of Paul's filters first though. And make
sure you have enough pennies for all of his new filters coming out. The filter
bank is a good purchase after that.

The main problem is that it is a little overprice IMO.

Hi Robert,

I have the first version of the Sherman Filterbank and find it quite
different from any other filter I have. It has a very smooth overdrive
that is aggressive without being excessively harsh, although it can get
very ugly too, in a good way. Remember that with the Sherman you get 2
filters, an LFO, AR and ADSR EGs, and an envelope follower. So, there is a
lot in the package. The two 12db/oct filters can be set up in series or
parallel. The older models can be had for a reasonable price on the used
market these days. They are a bit awkward to use rack mounted so I would
probably recommend using the desktop setup so you can get at all the jacks
on the back.

It has several different positions to mount in. Very unusual to say the least.
But they are all pretty cool. The problem is that to really use the
equipment, you need access to the jacks (as stated above). When mounted, the
jacks are inaccessible unless you have 2 - 4 spaces above the unit open.

Out of the 6 or so mounting positions, I like the one where all of the controls
extend beyond the normal FP plane. In this configuration, it works best at the
bottom of a bunch of other equipment because the several rack spaces below it
are extremely obscured.

While it does have additionally functionality as stated previously, it is not
as full-featured as normal modular (eg. MOTM) units would provide in terms of
tweakability.

The manual has some really unique, cool graphics to explain how the unit
functions. The best are how the 2 filters allow things to pass and not pass.

My biggest worry is that if I take out the LFO, AR, EGs and
EF (because I can do that with MOTM stuff here), do I still
have a unique sounding filter, with a unique sounding tube
VCA?

And recarding the jacks on the back, if I buy a FB, I will
probably try to convert it to a MOTM style panel, within 2
secons or so. Man, this thing is ugly! ;)

That could be difficult. It's a rather compact beast, all surface mount
design. Plugging a jack in certain points changes the routing behavior,
so a breakout panel could be annoying. A breakout panel would be super
cool though.

btw, I have a Sherman Filterbank 2 for sale, i don't use it often
enough to justify keeping it, as cool as it is.
$590, it's in excellent condition, and saw almost no usage.

Yes, you have a very different filter IMO but you don't have a unique
sounding tube VCA. There are no tubes in the Sherman.
