Mine too. This thing is a serious sound mangler.

I got mine also.

Ok, Ok, well just for the records I do not completely understand it
yet. So I started stuffing cables into it, pretty strange. I am
absolutely positive sure that I got the same sounds for the
spaceships I saw on 60's Japanese monster movies. I mean the exact
same sounds. A little modulation and there you go.

So that is how they did it!!!

hello all,
mine's crossing the atlantic as we speak (or sat in a dingy post office
warehouse in the midlands)
it might become dead obvious once i plug it in - but how's about some patch
info..?

Got mine too... Great job Tony!

For others that are having fun mangling sounds, try this too...

split your audio signal - run 1 to you mixer input 1 and run 2 to your
Freq shift input. then take the up output of your FS and run it to your
mixer inout 2. take your down output and run that into mixer input 3.

Now play with mixes of the original signal with the FS up / FS down and
get your freq shift close to 0 - you sine/cosine lights should be
flashing slowly...

have fun!

I got mine too. I thought I'd mention a couple of practical
applications, besides trying the most annoying noise to avoid alimony
;)

Last night, I was using it with the output of a drum machine. Try a
rimshot and hi-hat pattern with small amounts of shift with a bit of
feedback to create motion, or more shift without feedback for a
swooshing sound. Even without a noticeable amount of shifting, and
no feedback, it still creates a nice stereo effect.

With an oscillator as an input, with the amount of shift modulated by
an envelope, it can also be used to create non-harmonic partials for
cymbal sounds.

Instead of using filter resonance, you can get some amazing sounds
with only one oscillator run through a VCF by multing the output of
the VCF through the FS feeding it back into filter. This can be used
to create many useful bell and piano sounds. When driven by a step
sequencer, increasing the filter feedback with just a minute amount
of frequency shift and running the output of the VCF and the other
output of the FS through two VCA's driven by the same envelope you
can create complex stereo patterns.

      UEG---VCO-+--440--+---VCA-->
                | |
                +--FS<--+---VCA-->

You can also use the sine and cosine outs to modulate an 820, or the
CV inputs on the filter, or both, at the same time. With the one
cable patch, different knob settings can produce infinite variations.

Don't forget, in addition to being a FS, it's also a quadrature
oscillator -- try driving two VCA's with each panned to a different
channel (or invert them with two more VCA's with four speakers :)

Btw, how do you get each side of the 190 to sound the same?? With a
noise source, there seems to be a noticeable difference in frequency
response.

I'm still working on the manual and trying to ship units... Sorry for the
delay in the manual, but so many people showed interest in getting their
hands on the module beforehand, I decided to ship. I'm going to probably
post the first release of the manual tomorrow. You can view it, give some
feedback and we'll wrap it up and ship it.

Funny, indeed, I sort of wondered about that, but then figured maybe it was
deemed a simple enough device not to warrant having a user manual. It's
certainly easy to operate, although I haven't had the time to do any really
complex patches with it...

At any rate, I certainly appreciate having the FS now and getting the manual
later, so thanks for shipping when you did! :-)

Mine came today!!!

Looks fantastic, thanks for listening about the knobs.
Pity my studio is in pieces and I am in the middle of a move/
attic conversion.

Demos sound awesome, will be connecting up modular very soon,
probably at 3am!

Good work

cheers

Got mine today (technically yesterday, as I have yet to go to bed and
it's now Thursday). Talk about fast shipping! This is a new record
(what was it, a day?)

I'm now happily testing out the FS and will do one of my infamous
unsolicited Konkuro reviews on AH for your delectation or damnation.

RE: [motm] Encore FS manual on the site

2004-02-29 by Tony Karavidas

Hi all,

The manual is available for download now. It's the last one on this page:

http://www.encoreelectronics.com/cont_manual.html

I will now include it in any shifter that ships from now on.
For everyone that has received a shifter already, please let me know if the
PDF is ok for you or if you want me to send a copy. I just print them here
on a laser printer, but many of you probably have the same capability and it
would save me a little time.

Thanks again!
Tony

I've been experimenting with my new Encore Frequency Shifter, and I
made an unexpected discovery. I patched my ADV snare drum through the
FS, driven by a simple LFO beat. By giving it just the slightest
amount of shift, modulated by a slow LFO, the drum comes to life as
it takes on the effect of the frequency shift, as though the drum is
being hit at different spots closer to the rim. It makes the simplest
rhythm sound much more complex.
