Need "new music" suggestions

Need "new music" suggestions

2003-12-05 by Paul Schreiber

Every year at this time, I blow $$$ on new CDs. These are CDs that I work to/solder to
('background music'). I need new suggestions!

Here are examples of what I *like*

Eno: the 'ambient' stuff, not the guitar stuff
all Robert Rich
Enya (really!)
Pat Metheny
Steve Roach
Peter Gabriel: soundtracks

What I don't like: techo/'dance music'. No TR808/TB303 4/4 meter stuff. Don't get me wrong, I
like to *listen* to it every now and then. Need something "quiet". It can be old or new.

For example, on the CD player is Eno's "Apollo 13" soundtrack, followed by the Bud/Eno "The
Pearl".

Crow, I'm wondering, how good is the bandwidth on that?

The 'broadband' stream is stereo 64kbps using the RealAudio codec. Not
great, but certainly better fidelity than the old FM stereo broadcasts of
the HoS shows that got me through college in the mid 1980s...

I think they have a broadband sample show on the site somewhere, I can;t
remember.

Paul, you might like to check out some of the acts on the "Kranky" record
label. There are a lot of very nice records that tend towards the minimal side
of ambient music.

Amp
Labradford
Pan American
Stars of the Lid
Keith Whitman
Jessamine

And a few others I'm forgetting. All very relaxing.
If you're already spinning "Apollo" you can't go wrong here.

Hey Paul, check out these recommendations from the Dub Beautiful
Collective web site.

Maer (who runs it) is the guy who always books Robert Rich when he
comes to San Francisco.

Re: Need "new music" suggestions

Paul,

If you like Passion, there is also Passion Sources, which is some of
the original music that Passion is based on. Since Eberhard Weber was
brought up who records on ECM (http://www.ecmrecords.com) there are a
number of other recordings from ECM you may find interresting. ECM
has a very good selection of progressive jazz with ethnic roots. One
artist that works with Peter Gaberial and is on both Passion
recordings is Shankar (not Ravi) who plays a double neck violin. My
favorite recordings of his on ECM are "Song for Everyone" and Vision.
He has a wide range of recording out there that vary from jazz, rock,
Indian and Indie Pop. You might also look at Michael Brook recordings
some of which are on Gabriel's Real World label.

Enjoy!
Jay

None of this comes close to anything on the Examples Of What You Like
list. But it's nice non-Lounge good-to-solder-to music.

Anything on the Real World label. I'm listening to the new Afro Celt
Sound System record right now.

Jacques Loussier trio: jazz trio versions of classical pieces.

A Windham Hill compilation called "Soul of the Machine"

Erm, some of my dad's albums. He's a concert pianist.

	Music of the Night
	Seraph
	Classic Dimensions

The last three Talk Talk albums.
	The Colour of Spring

I second the recommendation for Cliff Martinez, in particular "Traffic" and
"Kafka".

My suggestions in the "ambient" category:

Biosphere, "substrata"
Harold Budd, "White Arcades"
Bill Laswell,, "Hear No Evil" (more or less ambient, anyway--lots of tabla
and other Indian influences)

The stuff I've listened to while soldering is listed at the bottoms of my
synth-building-diary web pages, but much of it doesn't fall within the
stylistic preferences you stated (or is stuff you already know about).

Re: Need "new music" suggestions

You have Gabriel's Birdie soundtrack, yeah? I assume so, but I hate to
assume since it's too tasty to miss.

Here are some others that toy around with that sort of 'ethnic' sound
(pitched drums, text-free, etc) but in a post-ambient/electronic way:

O Yuki Conjugate: Peyote
Rapoon: Vernal Crossing
Muslimgauze: Coup D'Etat/Abu Nidal
Zoviet-France: Shadow, Thief of the Sun

And I have to second, enthusiastically, the earlier recommendation to check
out Arvo Pärt's Tabula Rasa. It is one of the most magical contemporary
pieces I've heard.

best,

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
