Capacitor parts question

Capacitor parts question

2003-03-14 by elle_webb

Can anyone recommend a good reference for understanding capacitor
choice for the purposes of analog synthesis?

I find that I'm comfortable picking parts for other components, but
capacitors still baffle me. I understand the capacitance, voltage and
lead pitch, but not why one should use one type vs another.

Any help is appreciated.

Immediately purchase "Troubleshooting Analog Circuits" by Robert A. Pease ISBN:0-7506-9184-0.

But the cover photo alone is worth the price :)

What is worth the price are the pictures of RAP showing his annoyance
with a balky computer.

Better still-order the book from Bob Pease directly and he'll send
you an autographed edition! Mr. Pease is very good about answering
email, even if he refuses to use Power Point for his lectures, and
will answer you quickly. While not light reading, the Pease style of
writing is highly entertaining. Even better is the Pease style of
lecturing! Watch for him on nsc.com or just look at some of his
articles in the archives.

This book should come with a disclaimer, "do not read when drowsy."
A great book but not light reading.

While waiting for Bob's book, you might want to browse the following:

http://www.indiemusicsite.com/synth/dave/articles/capacitor.html

This is written by Harry Bissell and is quite informative. It's also an "easy
read".

Cheers,
George

Doesn't Rane also have something about this on their web site?

They need to find a better name for the page than
SyntheTek (sic).

I assume you are building someone else's boards and
you are trying to figure out what parts to order. The
best thing to do is to study the parts lists on
Larry's site
(http://www.wiseguysynth.com/larry/oakley.htm and
http://www.wiseguysynth.com/larry/cgs/cgs.htm). Also,
look over all of you MOTM documentation and see what
parts Paul has specced and in what situations he is
using those parts in. You will learn a lot!
