More from Ice Station Zebra

2003-02-25 by Paul Schreiber

No sun, temp about -11C. 1/3 of ice evaporated, but supposedly there is a bunch moving in from
Arizona later tonite. Probably no school tomorrow, either. Garage door frozen to pavement. Made
16yr old daughter assemble 600 jacks for use in MOTM-300/MOTM-800 kits :)

Almost out of Godiva hot cocoa mix :( Most precious commodity (toilet paper) holding steady. The
water coming out of the tap is 39F.

I'll think I'll take a break from soldering (catching up on assembled backlog today) and play a
little Ghost Recon: Island Thunder.

Jezz, I thought nobody else had even heard of these guys, much less listen
to them! Heh. "Illusions" is sounding a little dated now, but still a good
listen from time to time! That reminds me..where's my old "Kayak" CDs...

Still wondering exactly what Mr. Fritz is up to now...

Haven't gotten this one yet. How is it compared to "Outpost" or "Bestiary"?

Just wondering.

When the TP runs out, you're in trouble. Best of luck....

Just a note that Nektar played last June at Nearfest (www.neafest.com) with
Larry Fast. Camel is scheduled to play this year. :)

As an aside, I installed XM Radio in my car since I spend at least
1.5 hours commuting daily. XM has over 100 channels of music, news,
talk, etc. One of the commercial-free channels is MusicLab where
you can hear Gentle Giant, then Camel, then Primus, then Zappa, then
PFM, then Genesis, then ok you get the picture.

Highly recommended for less than 10 bucks a month!

OT: XM Radio Was: Ice Station Zebra

I've looked at XM, but that was several months ago and I didn't see enough
"alternative" type stations to keep me happy:

"Space" Music
"Weird" Electronica (Robert Rich)
"Normal" Electronica (Dance, Trance, blah, blah....)
Anything goes experimental or whatever (have you ever heard Harry Partch on
the radio? I want to...)
World Music
Progressive
Weird Indie Rock

Blah, blah... you get the idea...

How well are these bases covered now?

Dr. Demento used to use (and may still use for all I know) a bit of
"Barstow" in his countdown collage.

For what that's worth.

Yes, in Houston, on the Saturday morning Scordatura show, mostly modern
classical/avant garde.

On a couple of stations here in LA during the 80s and early 90s. Our Pacifica station used to carry a lot of great experimental/new music -- I used to listen and subscribe to those programs (they're all gone now). One program even had the name, "Genesis of a Music."

I wish there was a place to hear that stuff now.

When the Real Audio streaming is working, you can get the Pacifica
affiliate in Houston, KPFT. They have a long running Avant Garde
program, 11:00 pm to 1:00 am CST on Sunday evenings. The host Scott
Somers plays music such as Subotnick, Ligeti, Reich, Cage, Stockhausen
and many others. Fourth Sunday of the month is local musician's night
which tends to have a much younger crowd of electronic avant gardists
and experimentalists.
