New guy asks for advice

New guy asks for advice

2002-10-03 by auddog33

Hi all,

I'm new to your group and have just begun work on my MOTM synth.
I've just finished my cabinet and power supply and expect my first
shipment of modules any day now. My cabinet can hold 20 rack-spaces
worth of modules, and my current plan includes 13 modules. I will
definiately be building the 440 filter and would like to include
another but I'm not sure which one. My question is: has anyone
heard/used all of Paul's filters and prefer one over the other?
Also, is the sub-octave multiplexer a must-have module?

I welcome any/all advice. Thanks!

Matt

Filter preference depends on the task. What kind of sounds are you thinking of? Personally, I stick with the 440 a lot... although that needs a little repair, so I will be getting more familiar with the 420 before long.

I have the sub-octave, and I definately consider it a must-have. I use it a lot.

Tough choices. Depends on the type of sounds you are looking for. You WILL
want them all at some point. :) The 490 is one sweet filter (and only 1U!)
while the 420 gives many unique textures. I think, though, that the 410 is
a must have. It's basically three individually tuned bandpass filters swept
by two built-in LFOs and offers a lot of functionality for the space used.
It can also provide some stereo effects. (The 480 promises to be yet
another awesome filter, especially for more traditional instrument
emulations, but it's not available yet.)

The 120 was my first module and is included in nearly every patch I make.
It's great for experimenting and can add "width" or "movement" to many
sounds.

Cheers, and welcome to MOTMdom,
George

PS: better start building a bigger cabinet!

I concur with what other folks have said: you’ll want all of them eventually. And no, Paul isn’t paying us to say that. :-)

I have the 410, 420, and 440. (My 490 kit just arrived, but I haven’t had time to build it yet.) I like them all for different reasons. If I had to pick one or the other in addition to the 440, I’d probably get the 410. It produces a really striking range of effects, and just sounds wonderful. There are a couple of MP3 files demoing it on my website—go to http://www.studionebula.com and click the Synth button. Go to the diary section and check out the most recent entry (which is pretty out of date now—I’m way overdue for an update).

Have fun!

Wow, tough question. The 410 is an absolute must-have in my
opinion. It is so versatile, you will rapidly not want to live
without it.

The 420 has a very particular character that I love, and it distorts
nicely when overloaded. the 440 is beautiful, too, but it doesn't
always works distorted.

The 480 is completely amazing. You get a real bouncy, moogy sound
out of it. Of all, the 480 is less versatile, but definately
has 'that sound'.

The 120 is also a very multi-faceted module. You can use it as a
straight 'octaver' (but down to *4* octaves!). You can make it ring
modulate the octaves to produce really weird timbres. And you can
use it as a kind-of sequencer.

Yep. They are all must-haves...I'd hate to have to choose!

I meant 490, but I can't wait for the 480, too!
