Filter preference depends on the task.  What kind of sounds are you thinking of?  Personally, I stick with the 440 a lot... although that needs a little repair, so I will be getting more familiar with the 420 before long.

I have the sub-octave, and I definately consider it a must-have.  I use it a lot.
