MOTM music review

2002-05-11 by J. Larry Hendry

Today, I received in the mail a new CD offered by our very own MOTMer Jeff
Pontius.

I found the CD to have something I don't find in a lot of "modular" music -
variety. Hence some of it I really liked and some was not exactly my cup of
tea. The songs with lots of texture and synth layering I found very well
thought out in terms of what sounds go together and in the melodic content.
Those were my favorites. Certainly, the use of MOTM is quite obvious. :)

My wife and I both agreed that the first cut "Unknown Spaces" was our
favorite, followed by cut 2, "Storm Front." She has been into "new age"
music for some time. These two cuts run in that general direction.

In summary, Jeff has produced what I consider to be a fine work.

Fine business Larry! Now if Jeff would be so kind as to allow us
to support his artistic endevours (i.e.-where shall we send our
checks, Jeff?) we can all enjoy this new cd!

Congratulations on finishing this album, Jeff! And perhaps the
others of the group with cd's available should make their wares
available to those us who are only recently MOTM'ers. Perhaps
there is space for a list of these people and their mailing
addresses?

Chub (who when his album is finished will probably promote it ad
nauseum...)

I have a couple of things that feature a bunch of MOTM, check out the
"Dark Lit" and "Wabi Dub" cd's at
http://www.newandimprov.com/music.html. Also, listmember Mike Marsh
has a wonderful CD of algorithmically compositions that use only
MOTM, amazingly musical and listenable for such "process" music. And
of course, there's the amazing work done by Robert Rich. We should
establish a webpage for music made w/MOTM somewhere.

Cool!

My thanks to Larry for making his kind comments public.

Hopefully, but you can make an evaluation of your own at Ampcast where
there are 6 of the songs in .mp3 that you can listen to (remember, these
are in .mp3). Goto http://www.ampcast.com/music/17210/artist.php or
search on "Pontius" or goto electronica -> ambient (not sure where else to
put them - this 'genre' thing drives me nuts). Don't rely on 'ambient',
make your own evaluation.

If interested, I'm asking for $9/cd which includes shipping in USA/Canada
or elsewhere worldwide (I've been informed that shipping costs to UK or
Germany or similar is not very different than from within North America).
Please send me an e-mail.

Thank you. It has been a goal for several years.

Several that I know of (and I apologize if I have missed someone) are:
Dave Fulton
Scott Juskiw
Mike Marsh (whose cd I just received today and I'm in the 'middle' of
listening - very nice Mike!)
Robert Rich

I suspect that Paul S. has a complete list.

Interesting idea. Let's see if Paul S. nibbles, and if not, some friendly
motm websiter.

Thanks again, Jeff

Thanks for that info dave, I am sure you have told us before, but sometimes
I don;t pay attention. which one do you recommend for a guy that likes his
music to have melody?

OK Mike. I've been living in a cave. How do I get yours?

I woudl be happy to host a MOTM music links page at wiseguysnth if people
want to start sending me links to their stuff. Or should the page actually
have some MP3 files? I have plenty of room thanks to the generosity of
listmember Cary Roberts.

My advice to the list: get Dave's stuff, it is *really* good!

Jeff's stuff is amazing, too. Variety is the spice of life, and his
CD is varied in style, as Larry has said. I can't pick a favorite
just yet, it's still in the player! Good production values, too.

My CD is available for purchase or trade. If you'd like a copy,
send me a private email for a swap of your stuff, or go to PayPal
and send $13.00 to mmarsh@.... Caveat: this is a CD-R, not
a pressed CD, so it must be treated with some care.

I'm waiting to receive Scott Juskiw's CD, too, and will report back
on that one. Judging from the demos on SynthTech, it's gonna be
good!
