MOTM-490 THD plot

MOTM-490 THD plot

2002-05-10 by Paul Schreiber

Here is a comparison of the MOTM-490 and another "well known" Moog ladder filter.

Mostly, I use this sort of data NOT as "nah nah MOTM is great, you suck", but as a *relative*
measurement. Also, I will be in the future looking at different op amps, to see if in certain
situations the cost is justified (OP275GP versus TL072, for example). There will be times MOTM is
NOT the best, which allows for correction, especially at the prototype stages. In some of these
plots, I am splitting gnat's ass hairs.

I just did a full set of plots for the '110, and will use those to compare to the new VCAs (JH
has PDF'ed the new uVCA schematic for my "adjustments" heh heh). The '110 has 2nd harmonic
distortion only, which is that "natural, organic" sound (like tubes). The 3rd and 5th harmonics
are down over 100dB!

I'll post these as time permits. I'm just having my own special geek-fest :)

Plot: www.synthtech.com/files/m490_thd_1.pdf (about 5K file)

Paul, you are a mad scientist!

We all knew to trust you when you said your modules were the pinnacle of
performance. Then, as we played, we learned to trust our ears (if not our
soldering). Now you've gone and proven it with some geek machine! My god,
what have you done??

Sicko.

George

(Nice plot, by the way.)

Again, in many cases, plots like these are like saying "the 5000 pound bomb missed the target by
10 inches". It's not intended as some marketing hammer. 100% geek fest.
