OT: Schemo Software

2001-09-09 by George Kisslak

A quick question for all you MOTMers that are into a bit of DIY: I'm looking for a software package that will enable me to do schematic drawings and PCB layout, maybe even a little testing. What packages are you using? What would you recommend?

(Sorry for the OT post - I searched the archives first and didn't locate anything.)

(now, if I can just get GK to stop sending HTML mail...grr......)

www.cadsoft.de has the EAGLE Lite for like $50 that lets you do SMALL boards
(read the restrictions carefully).

The next step up is $400 ($200ea for schematic and PCB editor). It seems to
get good reviews (never used it myself).

I use a DOS version of OrCAD for simple schematics and Tango Schematic for
complicated ones. The
layout software is called PCAD 2001 (VERY $$$).

I am considering trading an earlier, 'dongle-protected' version (used on the
first 3 MOTM boards) that is PCB
layout only. Cost me about $4000. Has full docs, but NO upgrades, NO factory
tech support. Can't sell it, but
will accept trades (looking for Korg Wavestation SR or A/D, other
rack-mounted widgets). Also need
sample CDs for my EMU 6400. Win95/98, very easy to use. Again, has full
printed manuals/tutorials.
