Re: New file uploaded to motm

Last one. Paul wanted 440+410 - I synced the UEG with PULSE out of
320 and the 410 with the SINE out of the 320. More subtle effects
can be had by tweaking the 410; gives a kind of phaser-like feel,
but in stereo :)

I'll get rid of these in a week or two...

well, i think it's pretty obvuis that I have something wrong with either my
eg or my vca (in spite of paul (S)'s insistence that it's something else!
<jk> ;)

It'll be fairly simple figuring out which is not working properly & then
i'll either try & fix it myself, or send to paul for his super deal on
fixing modules....

i just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the helpful insights!

Re: New file uploaded to motm

I confess that to get that sample, the EG settings were twitchy.
But you can dial it in, if you take a little time with it (you've
taken more than your share!). For the record, the EG settings were
A=1 D=4.5 S=2.3 R=0 (slightly different from the last one). Also
note that if I touch the A or D knob, I will get 'clicks' which are
pretty annoying. Also note that dialing in a sine wave oscillator
is hard, too. It is twiddly!

Hi!

Ok, gotta' know... HOW'D ya' DO It?? I mean, what kind of voicings,
melody selection, MIDI-ing, recording, effects, etc. Please,
please, please?? <Drool>

Gotta' level with you -- When I listen to this piece, it's like
champagne bubbles popping ('cause I can't spell 'effervescing') in
my head! :-D (Ok, so I have synesthesia). But, yeah! It's

Again, THANKS for the swell present! I'm diggin' a LOT of your

Hi David -

Thanks for all you've said! I couldn't be happier that you dug it.

The process was actually very simple, as are the voices. All the
voices are the same patch with slight knob tweaks for each one. The
basic patch consists of 3 VCOs (2x300, 1x310). One 300 SQR out, one
300 SAW OUT, and the 310 SHAPE knob half way. All outs go to a 420,
the out of the 420 to a 190. One 800 mods the 420 and one mods the
190. Very straightforward VCo->Filter->VCA patch. Tweaks to the
ATTACK knobs on the 800s and the FREQ knob of the filter were made
for each voice.

It's an old synthesist's trick: combine a simple voice into a more
complex whole.

The music itself is even simpler. The whole peice is a single 16
step sequence. I used Seq-303 software from (now-defunct) Techno
Toys to generate the sequence and a Kenton Pro Slo to drive the
resulting MIDI into CV for the MOTM. The bass part is played in
quarter notes, the two baritone parts in 8ths and 3 high parts in
sixteenths. Some parts went through the sequence forwards, some
backwards, and some back and forth.

It's an old composer's trick: take a simple motif and combine it in
various ways.

As to recording, each track was played and recorded separately
(there are six tracks, or voices). The OUT of the synth went
directly to my board which is connected to my PC via FireWire. The
original recording and mixdown was done at 48 KHz 24 bits. It was
recorded using Cool Edit Pro 2 (now Adobe Audition). The only
effect is a slight amount of reverb applied by Izotope's Ozone at
mix down, and some slight EQ and compression.

That's it!

Mike

One more thing I forgot to mention: the whole peice was done using

Another fine work by Herr Marsh! Seriously, people, you should
purchase his CD's. Travelogue is permanently affixed to my CD
changer, and his "electric chamber music" of the first CD is well
worth listening to while watching the room grow dark.

We have some very talented artists in our midst- Dave Trenkle,
Celeste, Inform3r, and others (that's all I can name right
now...sorry-I'm not too sharp in the morning) who labor in their
respective arts. Keep uploading files for all to hear! Everyone
else-go to their websites, link them to your pages, tell your
friends, and keep listening!!!

Our little community should be able to raise itself to a higher
level. We have the numbers, the diversity and (without question!)
the intelligence.

Chub-recordings to follow!

Fun with 490s

2004-01-19 by Richard Brewster

I wanted to try something with my two MOTM 490 filters today. This is
what I came up with. Also this is the first sample I've uploaded. It
is three minutes long, hope the file isn't too large. I mistyped the
title in the MP3, which says "Two MOTM 390 VCFs". Oh well.

The audio part of this patch is two MOTM-300 VCO square wave outputs
each through a separate 490, then each through a MOTM-190 VCA driven by
its own MOTM-800 EG. This is mixed to a stereo out. The 490's are both
set at 2.5 resonance and the FREQ at 7.  The 1V/OCT inputs are not used;
the filters are not tracking with the VCOs. The wigglyness is created
by modulating each VCF with a fairly rapid sawtooth LFO. I used two
Oakley Little LFOs here, but the MOTM-320s would work fine too. The
sawtooths are negative in slope, i.e. falling most of the time with a
rapidly rising edge.

The control section is made up of a CGS Infinite Melody quantized with a
Blacet Miniwave. The quantized output is shifted by a pair of sample
and holds, so that one VCO gets the voltage the other just had. I used
the MOTM-120R as a pulse divider to drive the gate inputs of the 800s to
produce the rhythm. It's all clocked by a MOTM-390 LFO for the main
tempo. Every 8 beats a third S&H feeds a new voltage to the Bank CV on
the Miniwave, which has the Quantizer EPROM installed. (This third
random stepped voltage is also patched to the tempo LFO FM input, but
was not used during this recording. When it is, the tempo changes every
8 beats too for maximal weirdness.) I touched nothing during the recording.

I think it makes a nice demo of the timbre qualities of the 490. It
sounds really resonant without any other delays or phase shifts introduced.

Roadcase for MOTM

2004-01-19 by Jim Black

Anyone have experience using a roadcase with your MOTM
setup? Not touring the world... just back and forth
from the studio.

I saw a 14" deep 18 space rack with rack rails in the
front/back. Obviously, this would allow the power
supply to be mounted in the rear allowing for 3 rows
of MOTM and 3 spaces for a sequencer or voltage
regulator.

Does this shound reasonable - or should I treat my
MOTM like a vintage synth and NOT take it out and
record into a DAW at home and just take a CD into the
studio... i.e. instead of a $300 rack... buy a nice
Mytek A/D for 1K.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!!!!

well just for the record... I saw Robert Rich tour the US with his large MOTM, and we were his first stop from California to Scottsdale, Arizona... about a 7 to 8 hour drive... his MOTM is in a very large wooden Moog like case, about 20 units across by 3 rows tall or 15 space. It is not in any case, just 2 large metal handles on top Robert and I were taking before the show, and he said, and I quote: "I didn't even have to tune the oscillators from the road trip, they are still in tune." end quote.
Now... that says it all for me... Markk

OK, it ain't MOTM - but I had Clydesdale cases in Canada (the dollar was
really working in my favour at the time..) build me a two row 16 module
wide Anvil type road case for my Modcan system:

http://www.scampers.com/cyndustries/gallery.cfm?PageNum_Gallery=5

The rear cover was off when I took the photo because I was moving
modules around, but when it's all locked up with the front and back
covers, you could run a tank over it. Looks like a mini-fridge!
Additionally, the aluminum covering on the outside gives me excellent RF
protection - as if it were a problem anyway.

I have no worries moving the thing around, and there's just enough room
with the front cover on to leave the patch cables in for the killer
patch you don't want to lose before you hit the stage...

This is a nice demo! I love the 'bounce' of the 490.

And I really appreciate hearing how people go about patching things.
It never occurred to me to use an S&H that way. I promptly
dismantled a patch I was working on to try it out. VERY INTERESTING
technique...

Re: Roadcase for MOTM

2004-01-23 by Scott Gibbons

I've never had any problems roadtripping with modules mounted in SKB racks
tossed in the back of a truck.

BUT! I've had serious problems the couple times I tried doing the same thing
flying overseas. I just sent an LFO back to Paul for repairs because
Lufthansa had... well, I can't even imagine what they did considering the
kind of damage. Paul said they must've dropped the rack 30 feet or more; the
pots were totally f*cked.

And let me take this opportunity to give Paul some public praise. Insofar as
his business model focuses around using the highest quality parts and
construction, I don't remember him ever stating any policy about repairs...
Well, to make a long story short, he charged me next to nothing and turned
it around immediately. I was really floored -- I expected the best, but I
got more... Thanks again, Paul!

I'd also sent an H3000 through Lufthansa's baggage and the faceplate (these
are very heavy, very thick. As in bulletproof) was BENT, as were the rack
rails.

Now I pack each module individually in bubblewrap, in individual boxes which
I pack in larger boxes, with lots of bubblewrap. And as much as possible, I
include less esoteric gear on a technical rider to be supplied on-site.

But - returning to the point - never a problem just tossing fully loaded
SKB's in the back of a truck :-)

best,
- Scott

Please don't tell me he wraps a blanket around this
and throws it into the trunk!

As one who in my youth watched a CS-80 bounce off
walls as it slid down a flight of stars into total
destruction... I am overly careful on what I move and
the flightcase. Thanks.

That was my understanding - and I almost had to run outside to throw up
when I heard that!

I *almost* said something to him about it when I saw him perform, but
decided the better of it.

Although - OH!! THE HORROR!!!

I can't believe anybody would move a quality instrument of ANY kind - a
tin Irish Whistle for that matter - without a proper case to carry it in
when on the road.

I don't want to see Robert's face when he finally drops a mike stand on
it by accident or it slips from his grash as he's trying to wrestle it
up the steps to the stage...

I'm not sure how one would obtain a "proper" case for a MOTM system the
size of Robert's. If you were to have something like a custom Anvil case
constructed for it, the combined weight of the case and the modular
would probably be greater than he could lift. Considering that he
travels by himself when he tours, it would be something of a conundrum
if he couldn't move the gear in and out of his van.

MOTM modules are pretty sturdy anyway. That's one reason I buy 'em...

Re: [motm] Re: Roadcase for MOTM

2004-01-30 by Jim Black

There exists a 14" deep w/ front-back rails 18 space
case. Mount the pwr supply in the back and that gives
one 3 rows of MOTM with room for a sequencer.

This is an "Efx" case, so it doesn't have the weight
of the typical Anvil case. My concern is that leaving

I've had my MiniMOTM out more than a dozen times now.
But I'm ready to build a more "roadworthy" system using a SKB pop-up case.
My next project will be the MotoMobie.

I took three SKB cases-full to Japan awhile back. They were shipped
air-freight by my company. The cases were secured shut with straps,
and were "palletized" along with tons of other audio gear.

No problems-- although if I were traveling "solo" and used shipping
services, I would want to put the SKBs inside some padded road case
or trunk. As they stand, the SKBs provide no shock absorbtion at all.

For self-transport, they're great.

I only wish I had had Stooge Larry's custom SKB backs at the time,
since my modules were literally swinging in the wind out at the
theme park site. These are a "must" if you use SKB cases, IMHO.

That's more like it! :))

All three of them very nice weird. Mike, could you please
explain a bit how you created these? For example, what's
causing the stepping effect in all three of the mp3s?

Re: New file uploaded to motm

2004-03-05 by Mike Marsh

It's a little complicated to explain, I think, but pretty
straightforward. Deep breath, here goes:

I used a (Blacet) Binary Zone to produce the notes. The out of the
BZ is going into the Threshold of my Gated Comparator
(Cyndustries/CGS) and to the 1V/OCT of three 300s. OUTs 1, 4 and 7
of the GC go to 3 800 EGs and each is connected to a VCA (2 100s and
a 190). The outputs go to a mixer (830) and the single out of the
mixer goes to the FS. The UP and DN outs of the FS go to hard left
and hard right on my console for recording.

That's the basic patch. Some of the samples also have a Time Machine
in the path. LFOs are driving things like Clocks and sweeping CVs.
Truth Is Beauty (incomplete quote stolen from Keats) is three SQRs
that are slowly PWM'd in various ways and tuned to 3rds and 5ths.

The stuttering effect happens because the Gated Comparator stores its
output to a bucket brigade of 8 registers that get shifted at each
clock. I used registers to trigger envelopes that were not close
together so the effect would be obvious.

There is a bunch of cool stuff available using this patch. Don't you
love the smoothness of the sound of the FS. Tony did one hell of a
job and it certainly was worth the wait.

My next bit of experimentation with the FS will be to synthesize more
klangy type tones. I don't think that will be a problem :)

Ah I see, a lot more logic than I initially assumed. For a
moment I thought the FS was responsible for a lot of the
sound. Nice patch, btw! ;)

This is the first FS I hear, so I can't compare. But it sure
sounds nice and creamy. Especially in Truth is Beauty and
that first demo with the strat.

I've been enjoying the Mike Marsh demos. But why should he have all
the fun? :-)

Believe it or not, the frequency shifter is also capable of producing
blips in rare instances--what Paul calls "bug music." :-) If you go
to the Konkuro folder in the files section you can hear a sample. The
effect you hear was created using the FS and reverb only--no other
modules were used! I'll let FS owners discover how to do it, as this
is an extreme example and I don't want people to get the impression
that this module is "digital."

Also, if you go to the Encore site and click on the Frequency Shifter
and go to the demos for it, you'll find a demo I did a while back
which I think demonstrates the "classical" FS effect pretty well.

CALLING MIKE MARSH! (Or whomever else): I think some extremely
interesting effects could be had by using the FS with the MOTM
suboctave generator. I'd try it myself but my dotcom has only one
slot and one dedicated power connector for MOTM right now.

For those of you that don't subscribe to AH, John did a very nice
mini review of the FS up there. John, any chance of you cutting and
pasting that here? i think folks would enjoy and benefit.

What did you have in mind with the sub-octave stuff? Give me a hint
and maybe I can get something going.

Playing with a Quad Low Pass Gate throught the FS at the moment:
gorgeous!

Aw, shucks. 'Twern't nothin'. I didn't post it here because I
assumed most MOTM forum members are also AH members. But if anybody
is interested, I could post it here.

>What did you have in mind with the sub-octave stuff? Give me a hint

Because frequency shifters work best on complex spectra, I was
thinking that maybe some cross-multiplied tones in the MOTM-120 might
make an interesting input. And maybe it wouldn't! With analog, the
proof is in the patching.

>Playing with a Quad Low Pass Gate throught the FS at the moment:

Hey, don't forget to try it with the MOTM triple resonator--that
could be lovely too.

I had a bit more fun with the FS module tonight. In the Konkuro
folder of the Files section, I've uploaded a piece called "Ascent of
the Flying Island." It's from "The Flying Island," a longer work I
started but have been too lazy to continue. I used the Frequency
Shifter for the swooshy flying effect that comes in around the 1
minute mark and ends the segment.

I'll leave the file there only for a day or two because of its large
size (2 Meg), because it is from an unfinished work, and because the
synthesizer used wasn't MOTM. :-) But you will hear the Encore
swoosh. Maybe it will inspire me to continue.

That would be nice. I'm not on AH now, as I'm on enough lists as it
is. I did join the AHNE list after the meet was announced, but I
haven't seen any posts yet. Are any MOTM folks planning on going??

While I'm typing, is either the 480 or 510 shipping yet?? I haven't
seen any reviews or comments.

Yeah, the AHNE list is probably going to be kinda quiet until we get a
little closer to the event. It is still over a month away. I'm sure that
folks will get a bit more interested after AHMW in 2 weeks. Of course, I
will be attending but I'm not planning to bring any of my MOTM stuff. It
isn't very portable in its current configuration. If folks really want to
hear the Frequency Shifter though, I might be persuaded to put a few bits
in an SKB case to take to the event.

Indeed! What's intriguing about it is that it is a full blown synth
as well. 5 oscillators! I have it hooked up in minimal demo mode
at the moment, but I'm in process of building a serial interface for
it based on Brice's schematic.

Cool!

Nice! What's the bandwidth limit on the synthesizer? That's the only
problem I had with the old ones like the TI 99/4A attachment. They needed
something like an aural exciter to bring the fidelity up to par.

Can't find that info in the doc, and I didn't see anything on their

Answer: 1! And it's a Triangle wave to boot.

It's going through my new-fangled Mod Folder which is a combination
of an Oakley Little LFO, a CGS DC Mixer, and a CGS Simple Wavefolder
all behind a Schaeffer 1U. It's ugly because I suck at DIY, but it
sounds (dare I say it) Moogy.

OK, so I have too much time on my hands dreaming of Ibiza. The
whistle that breaks into chaos is all 190 in ring mod. The drums
are AdrenaLinn, vocal supplied by electronically twisted Casio SK-1.

What does EBS mean, anyway? And why is that initial tone so familiar?

What does that mean?!!! Are you KIDDING?!!! No, wait, you're under
40...

The EBS is the Emergency Broadcast System. It is an electronic
network that ties all radio and television stations together for
emergency service broadcasts. These broadcasts can be regionalized
or nationwide. The EBS was put into operation in the early 1950's
and fully implemented shortly after.

Why? Because of the nuclear threat and the Cold War! As a child, I
saw many films and filmstrips (beep!- next frame...) about how to
protect myself when a nuclear explosion occurred in my area. Useful
stuff like, "lie in a ditch and cover your head", "cover yourself
with a raincoat", "put your head down on your desk until your
teacher says it's safe". I only wish I were kidding, Mike.

You know, I can still remember the "Duck and Cover" song and film!
Yeah! There was this little turtle guy skipping down the street.
Suddenly he sees the "bright flash" of an atomic weapon exploding on
the corner! Does our little friend panic? Of course not, silly!
He merely pulls his head, feet and tail into his shell while
singing - "Duck, duck and cover! When you see the flash..."
Afterwards, he shakes the fallout dust off and goes on his way
whistling merrily. Naturally all of his friends would have been
alerted by the Emergency Broadcast Network and were safely ducking
under raincoats and the like.

Just be thankful that the familiar voice and accompanying eerie tone
has so far been "a test".

Chub - presently hiding under his pillow...

Re: New file uploaded to motm

2004-07-11 by Mike Marsh

Didn't mean to spook anybody :) I remember all the same stuff (I'm
actually 48 (!)). When farting around with the 190, that evocative
tone emerged and inspired the tune.

Emergency Breakbeat System - good one!

Hi Michael -

The blue thing is a modified PAIA FatMan. It's a funky-sounding
monster! The Blacets are, from bottom to top, left to right:

* Time Machine
* MiniWave
* DarkStar
* Final Filter
* PSIM-1
--
* empty 2U
* empty 1U
* New LFO
* DIY Mixer, CGS DC-Mixer PCB + Schaeffer panel
* DIY Mult, Schaffer panel
* VCO
* Dual VCA

Could you elaborate? You combined modules from Cyndustries
and CGS?

The original design and PCB was done by Ken Stone (CGS) and sold to
me populated by Cyndustries. I designed the Schaeffer panel and did
all the hook up...

WTB: MOTM style Dark Star Chaos front panel

2005-03-28 by Greg James

Fellow MOTM'ers

I just purchased some Blacet modules, one of which is a Dark Star.
Since I'm building a MOTM system, I'm now looking for a MOTM/Stooge
type front panel. WiseGuy's web site they are no longer in stock, so
it looks like I've got to get lucky. Anyone have one they're willing
to part with?

Larry, I'll be coming at you for a MiniWave and Klang Werk panel too!

Thanks,

FYI you need the *latest* FPE software to read this file. I have been
using version 3.2. It must be updated. I suppose they raised the
prices again.

Richard,

I'm not sure how you did that. Downloaded file says swf extension, but
still loaded in FPE.

Richard's comes closest to the MOTM standard. I would put RATE over the
LIMIT pot, it just seems more natural to grab the top knob for the rate.

CYCLE/ASR seems more understandable than CYCLE/CASCADE.

I also liked the jack layout, though I might swap the IN/CLK CV row to top,
and put the CLK IN/CLK OUT row second from top.

I added my version to the group files, modifying Richard's file to the
suggestions below. Plus I added the Synth Tech logo and changed some fonts
and lines to better match the MOTM standard.

Re: New file uploaded to motm

So far I like this one best. My comments:

It might be more functional with "clk in" and "clk out" as the first
row of jacks (just below the switches) with "in" and "clk cv" as the
second row. With the signal input jack closer to the four signal
output jacks you don't end up with the clock and signal patch cords
crossing over each other when trying to cascade the modules.

Also, do you think a jack to control "asr / loop" mode might be more
useful than a clock cv? It seems like it would be fun to have an LFO
or random source switch the module between ASR and loop mode. It
would also be fun to modulate the internal S&H clock. Without the
clock CV jack, an equivalent can be achieved using an external clock
source. However, the asr/loop switching is more difficult to achieve
with external modules. You could do it with a 700 VC router but you
loose the benefit of the all digital "zero droop" because you are now
doing AD/DA multiple times to achieve the looping.

Re: New file uploaded to motm

2006-05-17 by Mike Marsh

Hey All -

After a month or so of 650 fun, I decided to go MIDI-less for a change
:) (nice to have the options).

This is three voices (all 300s): 480, 420, and 440. Pretty standard
patch, but what's cool is the cascaded S&H. The recording is of a
single patch (no overdubs). I used a Blacet Binary Zone to generate
the melody, then put that through the S&H of a Blacet Improbability
Drive and that through a 101, tapping each output into a separate VCO.

The driving bass is a 440, maybe you can guess where the 420 and 480
are in the stereo field...

Re: [motm] Re: New file uploaded to motm

2006-08-08 by David Moylan

Thanks Chub.

It's really MOTM, Encore, Oakley, Blacet and Wiard! At least
currently. Oakley EFG on the left, Blacet Time Machine towards the
right and Wiard joystick with the keyboard. My FPE panel will be here
this week which will fill in the gap below the modules and contains
mults, 2 inverters, min/max functions (aka peak / trough, analogic
etc.), portamento and LFO controls and a few other things. 32 jacks!
Expect a new photo towards the end of the week.

I call it semi-portable because it's not for the bad-backed. It's
portable in the way a Twin Reverb is portable.

I'm having so much trouble deciding on the last few modules to make the
final cut that I'm already thinking about another cabinet (I'll probably
outsource the next one). For the time being most of the second string
will fit in the SKB popup but I just recently received a Steiner-Parker
filter and one of the last Time Machine panel / PCBs from John. Neither
of which will fit in the SKB. The inability to put the TM in the SKB
was what got me started on this project in the first place. Wish they
made a deep version of the SKB.

Like most of my projects this one has taken longer than expected. I was
away for nearly two months vacationing then working out in Colorado.
I'll be happy when this is complete. Then maybe some sound clips as well.
