sampling modulars for a remix
2001-07-09 by David Bivins
Hey folks, Thought some of you might be interested in this. Paul Wagorn/Puffboy asked me to remix a track of his. I basically re-recorded it, using my own instruments (we have some overlap). I used the two melodic elements of his track--the bassline and the melody line. The rhythm track I made from bits sampled from my MOTM system. I sampled straight to hard disk on my PC, using a Soundscape Mixtreme and SoundForge, then played each sample into my SP-12, where I did the final editing and assignments to the different filter settings in the SP-12 (different outputs have different filter settings). It's the first track on my mp3.com page: http://www.mp3.com/baldbastard - Superimposer (Baldly Bastardized mix) The reverb is the Furman RV-2 spring reverb. Other than one of those ubiquitous breakbeats and a hi-hat, all percussion is sampled from the modular. I really enjoy sampling the modular for percussion, and I've only done it once in awhile before this. I'll probably do it a lot more often now. I find that the best way for me to do it is to just hit "record" in SoundForge and start playing away. That way I'll be sure to capture any happy accidents. I can go back to that big file anytime to pull out bits and pieces. The SP-12 is ideal for me for a couple of reasons (and I assume the 1200 would be similar if not identical for my uses). First, it's totally easy to use for a dumbass like me. Second, you can move all your samples wherever you want in the performance section--you don't have to keep them in user slots where you'll have to put tape all over the box telling you where they are. You can put your new "kick" right where the SP-12 kick(s) was (were). Finally, you can easily reassign samples to various outputs. As I've mentioned before, sending a breakbeat or other sample with variable dynamics through outputs 1-2 and 3-4 is really cool, as those output filters are set to react to the dynamics. The first two outputs are used by default to filter the toms in the SP-12 sample set. Anyway, I've had little to contribute since my studio's been dismantled, so I hope this is over interest to someone.
