Larry,

I'm sure photos will help those who are new to MOTM building. I finished
the 20s (120, 420 and 320) a few weeks ago without a hiccup, thankfully.
I'm sure I will appreciate the 300 pics once I get started - for now, I
patently await its arrival. :)

Me and my lone 300 have this love hate thing going on. At first it
would not work, I fixed its solder problems with the transistors, then
it worked, and made wonderful sounds. Then, just now, it decided it
was not nearly as much fun to work as to have me prod all over it like
a caridac surgeon. So in an act of selfishness usually not seen by an
analog electronic device, it decided to stop working once more.

It got jelous because I was playing with the 420... yeah....

All kidding aside, I think that I did weaken either Q1 or Q2 in the
soldering process, and after happily discharging current for a few
hours they have gone on to the great silicon beyond. I will have to
troubleshoot more to be certain.

Uh, maybe I should have worded that differently. It's more like "I
patiently await it's arrival whilst I scavenge for any small morsel of time
to assemble the 410, 110 and 800 that sit on my desk patiently awaiting me".
I've been busier than heck, and darn it if it isn't snowing again!!

Geesh, I gotta get to bed.

Officially, no comment

2001-02-23 by J. Larry Hendry

Well, I have received no comments on the value or size
format of the few 300 construction photos I posted at
my site and announced to the list. I am happy to post and
nice complete set of them for the 300, 420, 820 and
anything else I build from now on. But, its work I will
skip if no one is really interested.

I have posted two different sizes. And, I am toying with one smaller yet.
Any comments about the size / vs readability issue would be appreciated from
anyone. I would like to figure out the ideal size and post only one of
each. I can make them so you can tell the print style on the top of the
ICs, but the file is too big. And, no matter what the size, they are no
good if they don't have enough resolution to be useful. So, any and all
feedback / opinions of that nature would be appreciated. That way I only
format the stuff once.

I agree with you Larry, the more resolution, the better. Of course there
are trade offs, such as JPG size & download times. I think the high res
photo looks preferable on my 21" monitor at 1280x1024 res, and I have a T1
so it loads quickly. If one has a lesser setup, maybe a slightly smaller
photo than the medium resolution one would be good. On the other hand, if
you want only one photo of each stage due to space requirements, then the
"medium resolution" is probably the way to go. As you say, if the photo res
is too small, it really won't help much.

To help reduce the space requirements, I'm not sure a photo at every stage
is really necessary. Basically, any place it takes a paragraph to describe
a certain procedure, a photo will always help. Some good photo ops: organic
solder done, tempco resistors, assembly of PCB to mounting bracket, assembly
to front panel, final photo of the module with all pots & switches wired and
tied. Oscope traces would also be nice!

Overall, I think photos are a good idea, even if one is an experienced kit
builder. I know when I was building the 420 I could have used one to verify
the install of that tricky Tempco resistor.

My thoughts.

Please do. I think they would be great to print out on a color printer
for use as a final check. Do you have one for the 410? My 410 works
and sounds great, but I believe has something wrong. The center point
for each of the badpass filters is different. ie to tune them to the
same frequency I have to set FREQ1 to 5, FREQ2 to 2.5, and FREQ3 to
0.

Well I see your problem--you're using BADpass filters instead of the
conventional BANDpass filters. I find that badpass filters are always
fluctuating in terms of their center frequencies and often they don't work
at all.

It seems that Paul sent you PCB and parts for his 411 filter; the
triple-resonant badpass filter. *I* was supposed to receive that filter;
Paul's opinion is that because I write crap techno, I don't deserve anything
that will sound good or filter anything in any way resembling Jean-Michel
Jarre's work. Fair enough.

I wondered why my 411 sounded "too" good. Now we know!

:)

Too early for April Fool's (not that I've fooled anyone),

David.
