Reverb/SEM/Keyboard randomness

2001-02-19 by revtor@aol.com

REVERB.. To the guy who posted a few days ago about a spring reverb
module.. GO FOR IT!!!!! It's a classic module/effect/sound that
would be welcomed with open ears (and wallet) into my system. Found
a manufacturer of a nice looking tank somewhere?

SEM.. How did their Programmer module remember/program patch
settings? Seems like some cool technology, perhaps applicable in
some way..?

KEYBOARD.. Anyone purchase the synth.com 5-octave cv/gate
keyboard? I like the duo/split modes and the MIDI spec. I'm
wondering about build quality/finish quality. Seems like a good deal
at $390.. How's the action? DX7 right?

rantings/thoughts from a fellow modular junkie,

SEMs have molex connectors that allow VC control of the modules inside. You need to
set the SEMs to fixed positions and the programmer sends "adjustment" voltages. The
SEMs also had *all* of the EGs duplicted. So, a programmer for a 4 voice has enough
EGs in it to run an 8-voice, or so I'm told. That would mean 16 ADS EGs in the
programmer! If you have ever seen one, you would understand why the most fragile
part of a 4-voice is the programmer. It is a "sandwich" of about 4 boards
underneath that module.

The SEM itself is quite cool, since there is VC control and patchability of just
about every function. I have seen some very cool completely patched-out 2-voice
systems. You end up with a 4-oscillator, 2-filter modular with an 8-step sequencer
in a very small package. It is quite labor intensive to patch them out though.
Actually, if Mark Pulver's MIDIwall site is back on line, you can see his
patched-out "3-voice" system. It is a very similar concept.
