My family thinks I have lost it

My family thinks I have lost it

2001-02-12 by bruce@sigalarm.com

Ok.

Some of you may not think this is a big deal, and all of you without
sin may cast the first stone.

Last night I built my power supply. First module, no big deal as it
was pretty much bold and connect with almost no soldering.

Today, I was going to tackle the easiest of the kits that I got in my
first batch, the MOTM-800 Envelope. So about 15 minutes ago I
finished and tightened up the knobs. I ran out of the garage and into
the house to show everyone. Yeah, even made my dear wife look at it.

I cannot stop smiling. It was not a big deal or super tough, but it
has been a dream of mine to have a modular synth since I was about 12
and got to see the one at the UofI in Champagin IL. My "over the top"
dream was that I could actually build my own. But in school I went
software instead of hardware, and even though I spent a good 4 years
in the military doing Avionics, I lack the design skills to do the
full life cycle.

So I am sure it has been said before, but thanks to Paul and everyone
else who put work into making these things real. It is truely a dream
come true for me, and it is tough to feel the joy of building it.

So tomorrow night I move myself up the skill scale and take on my
filter.

Warning!

Prepare wife for when you get a filter and a VCO going. You will be up all
night.
You will want to call in sick. I will personally be referred to as "Oh.
HIM!"

You have been assimilated.

In a normal house that might be the case. But my wife TOLD me that I
had to buy this stuff. She is a big synth head also. Now she wants
me to teach her to solder.

I assure you, the corruption goes pretty far.

You are a lucky lucky man. My fiance is really proud of the fact that I put
together the kits and whatnot, and is really encouraging, but even she isn't
into building them. Er, yet? :)

Hmm.... You got your wife to assemble a module. My wife has been
complaining that I spend too much time in the laundry room with the door
shut and the window wide open. Maybe I should invite her in. Heh heh
heh....

Yes, yes. We have all heard this before and some of us have even been
there. My wife actually assembled one of my MOTM-800 EGs. The good part is
since she had never soldered, I didn't have to break bad habits.

However, after ## (fill in the blank), MOTM modules, and few miscellaneous
projects and WHAT !! DIY ?? Her admiration of my addiction has slipped
into wondering when I am going to finish the painting and floor in the
bathroom remodel project and when can we start on the living room....
sigh....

She's excited now because she loves you. Later, even that won't be enough
to keep you out of the doggie-synth house now and then.

I drive my wife crazy when I'm building a module..."LOOK HONEY!!! The resisters are done!! Isn't it neat!!!" a little while later "LOOK HONEY!!! The capacitors are done!!! HONEY? honey? you're not looking..............honey?.............".
Anyway, welcome to this list!
