I'll admit that the depth was dictated by the other cabinets in my system so there wasn't any science involved. It did create a nice depth for mounting the power supply in the back with a good bit of room between the PS and the modules. What certainly helps is having a lower cabinet that is deeper and sloped. The bottom cabinet is 14". The rubber feet are very important when stacking. I've had the whole stack shake when I get 'a-patchin'. It sits on a fairly heavy duty table that does have some play with all the weight. I've never had any of the cabinets slide around.
