Of course! What is a vocoder but *two* filter banks, envelope followers and VCAs
:-)

I also like some of the other ideas pointed out; the interpolating scanner and
heavily VC'd small filter sets. Although, I tend to agree with the observation
about the EMS filter bank that the not-so-steep-sloped filters make for a smoother
sound that is perhaps better suited to the sort of shaping one does with a fixed
filter bank.
