It is actually 9 separate patches which he uses for 4 different pieces. He uses a Mac laptop running Cubase to sequence the patches. He his very clever in setting up 1 patch that be tweaked for different sounds. For this tour, he started patching around August and played around until mid-November until he could move from song-to-song, remembering where each knob is set. He then rehearses for about 10 weeks, 8 hrs/day. Quite a work ethic :) I saw him on the last tour in Portland OR. It was quite amazing how he moves from lap steel to flute to mixing with Ableton. This is due to the fact that all the 'moves' are rehearsed and structured. Some may think that this distracts from the 'live' aspect, but I think it's the opposite. It's quite a tour de force.
