Thanks for the review! Question: Does RR re-patch his big modular between songs? Or is he using one static patch (cable-wise) and only tweak knobs? - Robert

When I saw him play up here in San Jose I did not see him unplug anything on his MOTM. I don t think it would be a good idea to mess with the path he had up

Interesting. So he has a modular patch sitting there that works for different tracks, even from different albums. Like a stack of (weird) little mono synths maybe... - Robert

It is actually 9 separate patches which he uses for 4 different pieces. He uses a Mac laptop running Cubase to sequence the patches. He his very clever in setting up 1 patch that be tweaked for different sounds. For this tour, he started patching around August and played around until mid-November until he could move from song-to-song, remembering where each knob is set. He then rehearses for about 10 weeks, 8 hrs/day. Quite a work ethic :) I saw him on the last tour in Portland OR. It was quite amazing how he moves from lap steel to flute to mixing with Ableton. This is due to the fact that all the 'moves' are rehearsed and structured. Some may think that this distracts from the 'live' aspect, but I think it's the opposite. It's quite a tour de force. Check out this picture. It shows the patch he used. Looks crazy to me. No wonder I loved the sounds that came out of it!

Sounds like a stress job on stage, despite the soothing music. ;) - Robert

How would you document a patch like this? - Robert
