Yes, I do this once in a while.  I use a Pro Soloist so I only have 
one note to play, but this is good for leads and basses.

The other thing I do (a lot) is to connect the guitar through the 
various modules.  I have an Oakley EFG Deluxe and from there I can 
get a gate and also send audio to one of the many tasy MOTM 
filters.  FUnky!  The 510 makes an excellent hard distortion device, 
btw.
