I use black for the shortest cables (1 footers) and white for the longest cables (6 footers). I have a rainbow of colours between the two in 1 foot increments, the darker the hue the shorter the cable. How do you estimate the number of cables you'll need? For the upper bound, I count up the total number of jacks in my modular and divide by two. For the lower bound I divide the total number of jacks by four. To estimate the total number of jacks, I use 4 jacks per U as an average. I build cables as I add more modules. I just manage to stay ahead of the lower bound and so far, so good.
