Re: JH thinks analogue modelling

2002-11-06 by paulhaneberg

I think the idea of a series of modules based on analog modeling
(sometimes referred to as physical modeling) is a great one.

In fact the whole idea is to create an analog in the electronic
realm of a musical instrument. For instance for a woodwind, you
would have a generator of some sort which would simulate the reed
and a resonator which would simulate the body of the instrument.
Voltage control inputs would cause the generator to respond to such
things as lip pressure, breath, tongue placement etc.

The first step is usually to create a mathematical model of a class
of instruments. Most physical modeling synths are digital, but
there is no reason the mathematical formulas cannot be modelled in
the analog realm.

I have used some of the Yamaha synths which incorporated physical
modeling and some of the Korg synths as well, such as the Z1 and the
Prophecy. When you think about it the whole reason they are called
synthesizers is because they synthetically create an electronic
model of a physical instrument.

Although I love the idea of a series of modules with this basis I
hope JH takes his time. Paul has so much great stuff coming out I'm
starting to worry about how I'm going to afford it all. Oh well, I
can always sell more old stuff.
