newbie question re: blacklisting

2016-10-21 by Fred Smith

Hi all!

Just learning how to use milter-greylist. I'm making progress, but
have something I don't understand. Given these definitions in the
greylist.conf file:

        list "greydomains" domain { megabulkmessage/[0-9]*/.com }

and

        racl blacklist list "greydomains" spf self

without the "spf self" most of the megabulkmessage-originated messages
come back with a valid SPF...

I still find things from megabulkmessage***.com being greylisted. for
example:

begin 644 /dev/stdout
M3V-T(#(Q(#$R.C4X.C`V(&9C<VAO;64@;6EL=&5R+6=R97EL:7-T.B!S;69I
M7V=E='-Y;79A;"!F86EL960@9F]R('MD865M;VY?<&]R='TL('5S:6YG(&1E
M9F%U;'0@<VUT<"!P;W)T"D]C="`R,2`Q,CHU.#HQ-"!F8W-H;VUE(&UI;'1E
M<BUG<F5Y;&ES=#H@=3E,1W<V,S@P,3,R,C$Z(&%D9'(@6S$Q,RXQ.#(N,30V
M+C$X-%U;,3$S+C$X,BXQ-#8N,3@T72!F<F]M(#QF;&5C:&5S9$!I;G1R869A
M8W1O<GER+FUE9V%B=6QK;65S<V%G93<Y+F-O;3X@=&\@/&9R961E>$!F8W-H
M;VUE+G-T;VYE:&%M+FUA+G5S/B!D96QA>65D(&9O<B`P,#HR,#HP,"`H04-,
M("D*3V-T(#(Q(#$R.C4X.C$T(&9C<VAO;64@<V5N9&UA:6Q;,3,R,C%=.B!U
M.4Q'=S8S.#`Q,S(R,3H@36EL=&5R.B!T;ST\9G)E9&5X0&9C<VAO;64N<W1O

A(&%C=&EO;BP@<&QE87-E(&-O;64@8F%C:R!L871E<@H*
`
end

** SORRY, I had to uuencode that because my ISP kept rejecting the
** outgoing mail "due to spam content" if I just quoted the lines
** directly from /var/log/maillog.

I had thought that being blacklisted would cause the milter to just
drop the message. apparently I'm wrong about that, or have something wrong
in my greylist.conf file.

I'd appreciate some advice on this. Thanks in advance for your help! :)

Fred

PS:
Though I'm still working on the best way to configure milter-greylist,
I'm already seeing a LOT less spam than I was. (I've had the same email
address and domain since somewhere around 1995, give or take, so I'm
well known to all the spammers.)

 they have one that lets them pass if I don't use SPF SELF. does that
mean its valid?

A catch-all is valid. spf self let you detect it.
