A thread is spawned to handle each e-mail. For each thread, you have 
a sendmail pocess. Do you have 290 sendmail processes running at the same
time? If you do, do you actually handle 290 connexions at the same time?
Perhaps you have a problem with clients going away without terminating
the TCP session?
