Poly800 Mk-1 Battery Mod - have I damaged something? Error 1.85001

Poly800 Mk-1 Battery Mod - have I damaged something? Error 1.85001

2015-03-18 by imadethebbc@...

Hi,
I bought a Poly800 last week which worked: I was able to load the factory presets via a .wav file and most of the keys worked. I repaired the keys by cleaning the contacts.

While I had the synth open I decided to apply a battery modification which I found at this location http://analog.no/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=50&Itemid=49

I confirmed all of the connections and tested them using my multimeter.
This mod is not the same as the one I've now discovered in the file section.
I removed C87, C88, D23 and D15. I bridged the trace at D15 and cut the trace close to C106
I have not touched R1 or D1

This is a Mk-1 Poly800 which didn't come with a memory backup battery. There are two 'pads' where the battery holder can be soldered.

When I powered up the synth it started ok and I made a simple patch to test that all the keys worked.

I then tried loading the factory presets from a .wav file played back from my phone.

The tape load failed and when I re-started the synth I got the error message 1.8 50 01 on the display (see attached image.

I'm puzzled as to whether something corrupted when I tried loading the factory presets or have I fried something while soldering?

I put all of the removed components back into the synth and re-bridged the cut trace.

The synth is still showing the same error message.

Any suggestions on what I might try next? I'd like to try resurrect the synth and fix whatever I've done.

thanks,

Peter

That looks like a sequencer step display. Did you accidentally move the sequencer enable switch on the back?

Hello Peter,
 Replace IC34 (40H138) and while you're at I would try to replace IC33 (40H240) ..
the integrated original cost a lot but
 for a budget you can find equivalent 74HC138 and 74HC240 for € 1 ...
IC34 and IC33 prone to failure, however, replace immediately and solve the problem.

 let me know!

PS: Changing battery is functioning but the only problem is that every four months you have to replace the CR2032 battery because you download.

Re: [korgpolyex] Poly800 Mk-1 Battery Mod - have I damaged something? Error 1.85001

2015-03-19 by Michael Hawkins

Yes, that's what the step sequencer looks.
You can check the sequencer switch. Check out the schematics in the files section for help on tracing the specific matrix lines that work with the sequencer enable switch.
It could be that the matrix scanning chips are no good but that doesn't happen often. If your synth is making sounds check to see if one of every eight notes doesn't work. That's a good indication of a chip problem in the matrix keyboard scanning. If all of the note keys make sounds then it could be a bit more tricky to figure out. Sometimes the DTC devices fail.
Did your Poly display like that before you put the battery conversion in place? If is was OK beforehand then I suggest you double check all of work and check for any solder fragments or blobs that may have been dropped while you were doing the battery install. Also check to see if you broken or bent any pins on the cable assemblies when you did the work. Also check for any broken wires in those cable assemblies.

Hi Don, thanks for the quick answer. I'll double check that but I'm pretty confident the sequencer switch is disabled. It's possible that maybe the switch is malfunctioning so I'll investigate further.
I'm not familiar with the Poly800 : is that what the step sequencer display looks like?

Thank you Vincenzo, I am going to re-check all of my work first and then will investigate replacing the chips.
I am hoping to buy an oscilloscope and learn how to use it - the Poly800 might be my first lesson in troubleshooting using a proper tool.

I will. Thank you. I've spent the last 2-3 weeks getting a Roland Juno 106 back to fully working with some simple fixes. I bought a multimeter and will see if I can troubleshoot the Poly800. I imagine it is a simple error that I introduced when trying to add the battery. I have a continuity tester now so I can double check that the traces on the circuit board are not broken and also check that all of the ribbon cables are ok.

ok ..
I still have not had time to solve the problem of a roland d5 (turns on but the display shows only squares and not letters) and a korg m1 with problems of distorted sounds.
 anyway let me know ..

Does the D5 work at all, despite the garbled display? Check the contrast pot. If it doesn't make any difference to the display then check that the appropriate pin on the LCD is seeing a varying voltage when you tweak it.

hello Gordon,
thanks for the advice but in addition to the problem of the display incomprehensible Roland D5 does not sound ..
then suddenly everything himself begins to make strange sounds without the pressure of the keys and the LEDs do not light and pressing the function keys nothing happens ..
according to you can be burned CPU or some other integrated?

 thank you

Are internal demo songs OK? Do they play?

Anyhow, you can try following.

I would do this:
- if machine was not used for longer time, leave it switched on
through all day as long as possible, but keep eye on it all the time
(danger of fire ???)

- reset (see below)

- go through test routines (see below)

- check, clean and reseat all connectors inside with contact spray

- reseat all IC's in sockets (be very careful not to bend or break pins)

- measure PSU voltages if they conforms with the spec

- maybe change electrolytic caps in PSU, after so many years maybe
they need to be replaced

- check internal RAM battery, if it's dead, replace it

- load the original factory data from the ROM card if you have it, if
not, send some proper SysEx data through MIDI, be it original factory
set or other

Good luck!

P.S.: Isn't this KORG group?

--------
Roland D5 Test Mode

Before conducting the tests, make sure that the pedal and memory card
are not connected.

Entering test mode:

1 - Press the MODE repeatedly until the ROM PLAY LED lights. The unit
is now in ROM PLAY mode.

2 - Press and hold the EXIT and EDIT and then press the ENTER; the
display shows the following indicating that the unit is in test mode.

Select Mode
A/B + ***button

During the test mode the following buttons serve as test selector
button.

A/B+NUMBER1	BATTERY TEST
A/B+NUMBER2	DA ADJUST
A/B+NUMBER3	A/D, SWITCH TEST
A/B+NUMBER4	LED TEST
A/B+NUMBER5	MEMORY TEST
A/B+NUMBER6	CARD TEST
A/B+NUMBER7	TUNE TEST
A/B+NUMBER8	MIDI TEST
A/B+BANK1	KEYBOARD TEST

Press and hold the A/B and then press the DISP: test routine will
proceed to the next each time DISP is pressed.

To exit the test mode, turn off and on the unit, or while holding the
A/B press the INT/CARD.

------------
To check your Pitch and Mod levers go to test 3 which is the A/D and
Switch test. If you press the pitch to the right it should show in the
display an increase from 000 to +127. The other direction should go
opposite - 000 to -127.

With Mod lever it should go from 000 at rest to 127 when pushed forward.

You can also check your panel switches and hold pedal inputs.
-----------------
There doesn't seem to be a 'normal' reset procedure however Roland has
a section in the service manual called 'Setting Data'. Here it is...

Setting Data

If the tone RAM (main board IC17) has lost the tone data due to
battery replacement or the tone RAM itself has been replaced, take the
following procedure.

1 - Enter test mode.
2 - Holding donw the A/B, press the BANK 7; the following settings
will return to the factory value:

SET UP
MIDI
TUNE/FUNCTION
KEY TRANSPOSE

To recover Patch, Timbre and Internal tone to the factory setting,
proceed to the following steps.

1 - Enter test mode.
2 - Insert the memory card (D-5 FACTORY PRESET CARD) into the MEMORY
CARD slot.
3 - Holding down the A/B, press BANK 6. The display will show the
following message, and the recovery process is completed.

FACTORY PRESET
Load Completed

NO NO NO. Electrolytic capacitors from 1989 are going to be OK. Statistically, they're OK. The chances of a electro cap from 1989 being bad are very LOW. And the symptoms of the problem don't remotely sound like a electro cap problem.

Everything else is good advice. :-)

Hi, Mike,

I know opinions on recapping can differ, so there's two times "maybe".
In all cases it can't be a mistake to check how they look.

I have included PSU problem, because wrong voltages are often a
possible source of wrong function, and electrolytic caps are first to
be suspected. Not just my experience :-)

change in behavior could be a foreign conductive object in there creating chaos.

I had such a thing happen to a Kawai K3. When I moved the synth, set it down on its end a few times I heard something rattle in it.. powered it back on and the problems moved around..
finally I found a small pebble sized black ceramic looking object inside the synth.
When I removed it and powered it back on, all was working again.

Look for something where boards might be stacked close to each other.. something could be sandwiched in between, as was in my case until it dislodged itself.

Hello Daniel, Mike & perkins 211,
thanks a lot for your valuable advice .. I understand that it was not the right section to discuss it and I thank you very much for the opportunity ..
just back home in 15 days I follow the procedures that I have recommended hoping restart it ..
I let you know the result.

hello
 Vincenzo

Re: [korgpolyex] Poly800 Mk-1 Battery Mod - have I damaged something? Error 1.85001

Hi, hate to butt in but you say there's an IC on the market, that we could order for less than a fortune? Where do you order your parts from, if you don't mind me asking?

I may be mistaken, but with the right IC, we could probably make our own right? Or are there other "Unique" parts that would preclude us from doing that?

I do not have the hawk, or Moog slayer, but REALLY want both...I understand it's a 3-4 month wait for the kit....painful! As a nube to the 800, I'm not sure I'll have many patches worth sharing for a while but rest assured once I do, i'll have no problem sharing with anyone :) Right now my chief priority is getting my 800 back on it'd feet again, any info you have on the tape transfer fix is appreciated as I have some trouble with broad style instructions. I.E I really need things spelled out for me, like a third grader.

Anyhow thanks for getting in touch, and I look forward to getting deep into this great little synth with you all
