Mod questions

2007-03-27 by gmanca101

Hello,

I have a poly 800 that I'm thinking about modding and I want to know
what other mod beside the MoogSlayer would be best to add? I'm looking
to add just one more knob/switch so I was wondering what mod would be
best i.e. the FM mod or the db switch or the resonance mod.

Thanks!

FILTER SWITCH! that's what i did - the moog slayer and filter switch. i have to say that i'm using the 12db/oct setting most of the time. such raw sound!

Why not all of them ? >:) They don't exclude each other :) Btw. What did you mean by saying "resonance" (mod) ?

Hi there,
I did Moogslayer (i.e., cutoff & resonance controls) + switch for toggling between factory settings/Moogslayer + FM-800 + 12/24 dB filter cutoff slope switch + audio in to VCF (thru EG3)...
you can get real serious noises out of these nice mods...

audio in to VCF (thru EG3)...

Hi David

I'm interested to know a little bit more about this audio in mod. Do
you have schematic or something that you can share with this group?
It will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Mod questions

you can find the explanation here:
http://cometalabs.blogspot.com/

Audio Input:
Drill a hole and add a "normally closed" jack. This will be your audio
in jack. Desolder the + lead of cap C24 from the circuit board. Add a
wire from the desoldered lead to the tip of the jack. Then, solder a
wire from the empty hole where the cap used to be, to the normally
closed lug of the jack. The final step is to solder a wire from the
ground lug to a suitable ground spot on the pcb. Done!

Thank you very much Marco. Did you do this mod? Is it worth the
effort? Can you use all the paramaters to modulate or to shape the
sound that you input in the Poly?

Hi Satnom. As for the audio input, Marco's explanation will do. I havent got here the exact link i follwoed (it was one old post in this same NG). When I get home ill email it to you.
However, as regards 12/24, please check one of my latest posts, since the post linked in Marco's page has a mistake that will render the synth virtually mute AFAIK....
YOu'll find a diagram for 12/24 in my post. REal easy.

Is the mistake is to remove all of the C103, I think we have to just
cut the positive leg, Am I right? And also, what do you think of this
idea of mounting a 100k pot in place of the switch?

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: Mod questions

Yes, the mistake is the removal of the C103 and inverting polarity.
The 100k pot will allow a transition between filter slopes. I wouldn't implement it myself since most usual way in history of synths has been toggling between them rather than fading... A pot takes up more room as well than a switch.

Re: Mod questions

:)

I've found some more infos about mods... Anyone can try em?

1.
"It seems that the most flexible way of Modifying the 12db/24db filter
capabilities would be to add direct output jacks for each of the two
filter
modes
+ one audio input jack into the chorus unit. This, I think, would be
the most
non-limiting mod you could do."

2.
"Another worthwhile mod (while on the subject), would be to add an On/Off
switch to turn the Noise Gate into bypass mode. I've found that the
Noise Gate
(Which is FET "F1" on the KLM-598 board), can indroduce a slight click
when
it switches + it seemed to be that it cut off the tails of the "Release
envelopes".
To add the bypass switch, use a SPST toggle switch to open/close a
connection between Transistor "DTA1" emitter & collector pin (One will
be the
middle pin of the transistor the other will connect to Resistor "R19"."

3.
"Also, If you've added the VCF Audio Input mod I posted, here's a cool
trick.
While monitoring from the headphone output, patch one of the Poly-800's
Line Outs back into the VCF audio Input. What this does is setup a Voltage
Controlled feedback loop, IE. Envelope 3 will control the feedback level.
So Imagine you set up Envelope 3 with a long Attack + Long Release
Envelope, when you hit a note, both resonance + Chorus feedback will
fade in
with the Attack, release the note and it fades out... Pretty nice
patch, you
have
to tweak the onboard resonance + the master volume knob to get useable
results, but once you found it, it's a beautiful sound."

I will try it. I did something like 3. VCF input I tried to connect
instead of noise-producing transistor - there is very sensitive
input, for me it works very vell vith bass guitar...

Sorry, I got confused initially thinking that the Moog Slayer was one
mod and the resonance was another when in fact they are the same.

Re: Mod questions

Dave,

Thanks for the response but I have two questions. How do you implement
the switch that toggles between factory setting and the moog slayer?
And does the audio in allow for a sound to be manipulated without the
need to depress keys, simply straight input and output?

Thanks!

no schematics, but original post is here http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/korgpolyex/message/350

Hi,
For the moogslayer switch, see Olaf's photo album
For audio in, you should have a key deprssed, or run a sequence or play the keyboard. Try trigering different notes with parameter 43 set to 1 or even 2... real nice! Fiddle with EG3 parameters and parameter 45 value so as to let the filter EG have more presence... Experiment...

HI, sorry for not having replied before.
For switch implementing, please chek the Files and Photos section, Olaf's album.
And yes, you do have to dpress keys or run a sequence in order for the audio to be processed. That makes for the best of it-- you can program a patch with filter keyboard tracking set to 2, program a sequence spanning all the keyboard range and hear the results of the audio being filtered differently according to the MIDI note...
You could alwyas "hold" a note and then tweak the cutoff/reso...
