There is a LOT of free sounds out there, some are even pretty good.
If you don't like to do your own patches, you could download some soundfonts
to check out whether that's more after your taste.
A good site to start with would be www.hammersound.net - tons of free
soundfonts of all genres. As you are on a Mac you will perhaps get you some
tool to decompress .rar files, plus some of those files are in .sfArk or
.sfPack format - in that case you may even need virtual PC or so to run the
appropriate decompression programs.

Then, there have also been quite a few "native" patches being hosted through
people on this list (sorry, my own site is down, still looking for a new web
hosting service).
http://musicbootcamp.com/audio_sample_library.shtml has a list for EXS sites
and in the group section of Yahoo (see footer) you'll find another link
site.

Sascha

Thanks for the plug, Sascha. My site also lists links for Soundfounts as
well as plain audio samples. Most of the links often lead to other links.
There's enough to keep one busy for quite a while. -Jer

One word of advice Sara: patience

I don't mean to come off as pedantic, but when I was in school, I didn't
even have my own computer. Yeah, yeah, I know it sounds like the old, "back
in the days, we had to walk a mile for water...", but it's true. You can
get a lot of sounds for free, but they won't all be great. On the other
hand, you can still make beautiful/interesting music with OK sounds.

Imagine if you didn't have EXS, or Logic, or a computer. Imagine that you
had to limit yourself to a piano, and writing on paper. You would then have
to find musicians to play what you wrote... for free!

Just a thought from a 40-year old geezer.

Ned

My website is still down due to me searching a new provider. But as these
are rather small files I could easily mail them away to anybody. Perhaps
there's somebody who could host them permanently?

Sascha

I will. -Jer

Can you send them to me? I don't use them at all.

We should be able to put them on the yahoogroups files section no problems.
Failing that I can easily host them on my site.

I have just been sending them to Jer. I find a direct link to be more
comfortable than the Yahoo file area as you have to login each time.

Thanks though,
Sascha

I bet a lot of people have them.
I'd like to get them as well. Now that DSL is finally there I only hope I
can get into the AKAI site one day (seems to be down or overpopulated almost
24/7).

Cheers,
Sascha

I could host them. Heck, I have them myself, so I could put up my
collection. I just don't have the time right now -- horrid deadline
to be met before going to bed in a few hours...
