EXS24 hi-hat grouping capability is pretty paltry...

2001-02-25 by dangcookie@home.com

Shutting off an open hat with a closed one by means of limiting
polyphony of the hihat group to 1 is a pretty weak solution for hihat
grouping. Open hats do not sound natural when you limit their
polyphony to 1. Unity has this same limitation. As I recall, Roland
has the hihat linking capability figured out. Emagic: if you're
listening, please improve the drum module capabilities of this
sampler.

I read through most of the messages on this list, and learned that
Logic does not allow the use of EXS audio instruments to be used in
the Environment the way you can normally use a midi instrument.
Unfortunately, I bought this program in order to use it in my drum
map. I wish I'd known. Does anyone have a word on a fix for this
issue?

I understand that it is your first day with EXS but there are some things
missing from your observations. 1. You can have polyphony of 16 for any of
your mapped samples. It is on the facia. Click poly and the numbers will
light up. 2. You may have to rearrange your drum map accordingly but it
will do whatever you want it to and yes to play the drums you require will
need it to be highlighted in the arrange page just as any midi instrument.
I am no expert but I hope this calms you down enough to try a slightly
different way of working and enjoy the benefits of the EXS.
Peace

Lee,

Polyphony does not solve the problem I mentioned. If you set
polyphony to 2 for the hihat group, a closed hihat won't shut off an
open one. So you have to set polyphony to 1 in order to solve that,
but in the process you end up with open hats shutting off open hats,
which sounds completely unnatural. Natural-sounding hi-hat grouping
is not solved by polyphony, as I mentioned in my previous email.

I'm pretty experience with Environments in Logic, and I know that
this does not solve the problem. By needing to highlight the EXS
instrument in the Arrange window, you cannot use an EXS instrument as
part of a drum map. This is one of the (now-known) limitations of
Logic with the EXS.

Seriously, I do appreciate your help. But I'm pretty sure the
problems I mentioned are unsolvable, and are a blatant limitation of
the programm, as it currently stands.

Noble,
You make a good point here. The need to highlight in the arrange page
is annoying whenever you go to edit an ESX Instrument and you have
forgotten to Hilight it. A better way would be for it to become
active whenever you select it in the mixer page.
I don't know how you might get round the drum edit problem tho'.

You mention in your first post that Roland had got the HiHat
polyphony problem sussed - how do they do it?

It is certainly true that ESX is a young application, and has several
shortcomings at present. Its main advantage has to be the
integration. I hope that Emagic get it together to improve it very
quickly now that we have shown faith by buying it.
