Does stylus use midi sequences like normal Groove Control libraries or Recycle? If so, can it automatically generate and insert them in the arrange page (like Dr Rex in Reason) or do we have to go throught the rigmarole of importing midi files into Logic? regards Hector [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Right now, Stylus uses normal MIDI sequences like GC libraries do. However, here's a neat trick: You don't need to use the Import MIDI file function of Logic. You can just drag and drop the MIDI file directly to the track you want...very fast and cool. Put the Stylus MIDI Files directory (or any other GC MIDI Files) in the Apple Menu items folder or in the Windows Start menu and you can quickly drag and drop right from the Menu! It's the fastest way to work with Groove Control by far. Best, EP

Eric, thanks for the tip about a MIDI folder in
the Apple Menu. I do wonder however how I can
drag-and-drop from the Menu list? It seems all I
can do is select a file, not drag it...

That's what I thought... thanks!
Ned
PS: there might be a utility out there that allows
you to 'tear' off a file from the Apple menu, no?

Actually, I prefer this.

It's really cool to put your Main Groove Control folder in there, with Sub folders of each of the GC products MIDI files you have. It keeps everything really organized and accessable. Best, EP

On the Mac, click and release the parent folder in the Apple menu containing the midi track you want. This will open the parent folder of the midi track so you can drag the midi track to Logic.

Apple recommends against doing this, but it has always worked. Sure beats navigating folders by doubleclick-opening them one by one. It's just a pity that nested menus only go 5 deep... Taking the MIDI folder suggestion plus my own a bit further: you could make aliasses to all your 'important' audio-related folders and/or audio applications, create a new "Audio" folder in the Apple Menu folder (for organisational purposes), and dump all aliasses in there. I've done that with all relevant apps and such, and hardly ever have to manually navigate my HDs anymore. -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra <h@...> Omega Art: http://www.ision.nl/users/h/index.html

This has worked since I started using the Mac since at least MacOS7.0 I do a lot of things Apple doesn't recommend. That's what I love about Macs. Regardless of the bureaucracy, the thing does exactly what I want it to do. Macs are pretty powerful in the hands of customization. They are really flexible. You just have to know how to exploit them. Doesn't come with a start menu? Why, I'll just make my own, that works better than any other... (Incidentally, it's the same corporate dumbness that excluded the apple menu in OSX. A backlash from the Mac community ushered a quick reintroduction of the feature. Duh!). The only reason the practice you mention may not be recommended (that I can think of) is that, if you place a removable drive in the apple menu and the drive is later unattached, the alias gets confused. Permanently attached HDs never have a problem. An added benefit to putting your HD in the apple menu is that you also get to bore down through your desktop folder which is located on the root directory of the disk but is otherwise invisible. My desktop stays pretty full, and this is the only way you can quickly drill down to sub-items on the desktop. -Jer

Thanks for replying Eric. I am on a windows platform and cannot get your suggestion to work. I have copied the midi sequences folder for EthnoTechno into the C;\Windows\Start Menu directory and yes it shows up with all the sub folders in the start menu. I can drag a .mid file to a point over my arrange page but when I release it no sequence appears on the page. I have never managed to drag and drop anything into Logic. Any ideas? Cheers Hector. I always drag & drop out of explorer, *not* from the start menu... Open the midifile folder in explorer and drag to the Logic Arrange Window. Works OK here. I have to open the Apple Menu Items folder, drag an item out, then back again, and all is fixed. Strange....does that happen to you? Regards - Colin

I'm not sure if I understand correctly, but sometimes the HD-aliasses stop having hierarchical menus -- i.e. they behave as if the alias points to a file instead of a folder. Deleting the alias and making a new one fixes that. Maybe moving it out of & into the Apple Menu folder works equally well. When having removable media (to reply to another remark in this thread) the system can get confused as to which alias points to which HD -- so your System partition can suddenly get the hierachical menus of your Application partition. I think the aliasses to HDs are not assigned by name but by SCSI (or whatever you use) ID. So when the order/ID of the disks changes, the aliasses get mixed up. -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra <h@...> Omega Art: http://www.ision.nl/users/h/index.html

Hi all I've been sent a working version of this by the lovely Chicken people, but I can't get it to put the .exs files in the Sampler Instruments folder and the samples on an external drive, wwhatever I select in the options box. Anybody got this working? Regards Brian

Anybody got this working? Regards Brian There may be a couple reasons. First, you may have an e-mail temporary version, and you haven't downloaded the extra Setup files from our web site. There may have been people that we neglected to mention this to. That could cause the .exs files not to be written. Another could be that they being written to the location mention in Options, but you aren't looking there. The last reason that I've seen is that they are buried in the middle of all the AIFF or WAVE files that are written, if you've chosen to write both types of files in the same location. If none of these solves the issue, send us a log file of your session and we'll look at it and respond real quick.
